Not a rant. Not a rave. Its just:

We watched a documentary today on how HIV/AIDS has affected the global community and it was really sad. It didn't make me cry, I was just in shock. That something so easily preventable is so widespread and so few people in other countries have access to treatment is terrible. And that so many political leaders are in denial (or were in denial) about HIV/AIDS in their countries.

• 26 million people have died of AIDS
  
• 25 million of them were African or of African descent
  
• 5.6 million children have died of AIDS

Storytime!

When I was 16 I got a part time job at a shop. One lunchtime, when I'd only been there a few weeks, I was in the staff room. There were 5 other people there, all aged 40-50, who'd worked together for a few years. They were discussing another guy who worked with us, Ian, who made no secret of the fact he was gay. As I sat down to eat my lunch my supervisor said that she didn't think Ian should be allowed to go on a first aid course because he was gay. Everyone agreed with her. I kind of choked on my sandwich in disbelief at this point, and everyone looked at me, so I said, "are you saying that you don't think Ian should be allowed to be qualified in first aid because he might have HIV?" And my supervisor said yes, she thought it was likely he would have AIDS and if he did have to resuscitate someone he would pass it on. By this point, I was absolutely boiling mad, because everyone in the room was at least 30 years older than me and they were all agreeing with her. So I pointed out that:
1. if he had AIDS he probably wouldn't be in a fit state to work, at least for much longer
2. it was actually more likely that she was HIV positive, because it's now spreading more through heterosexual sex than homosexual
3. the virus isn't present in saliva, so the chances of passing it through mouth to mouth resuscitation are very minimal, but if Ian was in fact HIV+ he probably wouldn't take that risk anyway and wouldn't ask to do the course.

Everyone went silent and stared at me, and I left the room. I wasn't embarrassed, but I think they were. Three of them came up to me later and said they hadn't realised the topic of conversation would upset me, and I pointed out that it wasn't the conversation that upset me, it was their ignorance.

Basically, I think people should learn about it. It's a pandemic. It's not only teenagers who should be taught either, its adults as well, because they all still think of it as "gay related immuno deficiency". My mum thinks Rent is "rude" and "inappropriate" because people are HIV+, and she refuses to watch the film.

Rant: My sister over dosed on meds last night. Shes okay, but doesnt think its a serious problem that she did this. My parents were at the emergency room almost all of last night. Now shes home, and when I tried to get her to understand some of the consequences to her actions, she just said "I dont even see why I talk to this family anymore." Im really scared shes gonna hurt herself seriously or even kill herself if she keeps all this up.

Rave: The first soprano part for The Secret Garden is so high, but I love it.

Rant: Dentist. I got laughing gas. And he had to give me dozens of anesethic shots on all four sides of my mouth because I had to get my last baby teeth pulled in each quadrant. First, I got three cavities filled. Then he tried to pull the teeth. And tried and tried and tried. I was practically crying from the pain, and these damn teeth wouldnt come out. It turns out they have cemented to the bone. So next wednesday I have to have surgery. They have to cut open all the tissue, cut out all the teeth, remove some bone underneath, move my adult teeth and stitch it all up. I'll be asleep though...

I remember my dad sat me through two hours of 'Intervention', that show on MTV or Discovery or something, and I coudn't talk to my friends that smoke tobacco for a week without mentioning how tobacco makes your lungs flake out black mulch into your bloodstream & other such horrors of science.

Edit: What's with the obsession over Runway? It IS Runway, right? *Ugh, I'm so repressed by my parents.
