That cracked me up.

"Heath Ledger is now in Hell... besides which nothing else about Heath Ledger matters now."

Seriously?

He was acting. Acting. Say it with me people. That just made me giggle. If they can find some way to tell the police when they come and the paparazzi:

"Hey, we're protesting some actor because he protrayed a gay man in a movie. We have a right to be here."

Buzz off you morons.

Rave: It's been my absolute dream since I was 7 to be a presenter on Blue Peter, and today I decided that since nothing ever happens if you don't try I will apply for a summer placement. Not presenting, but in the studio. I figure you have to get in there somehow! It's not that I ever expect that I will get to actually be a presenter, but there's less chance it will happen if I don't even try, right?

It is very easy to believe this was an accidental overdose. I myself have a tendency to take a handfull of pills - usually counting more than 14 of assorted sleeping aids - just to be able to sleep for at least 3 hours. Lack of sleep and too much stress can make you over estimate what your body can handle based on what you know doesn't work. If I were to die tonight of a drug overdose, it shouldn't be surprising, but it wouldn't be an intentional thing.

re your u-value question, have you considered any of the following (you prob have but will give my tuppence worth anyway)

1. triple glazing or different spec of windows in some way.
2. change construction of external wall e.g. introduce cavity if there isnt one, change to masonry if using SFS
3.increase insulation of the external wall
4. will changing from a ground bearing slab to a suspended slab with a solum help?
5. extra layers of plasterboard or thicker plasterboard on inside face.
6. reduce amount of framing on window (will this make is worse?).

sorry not much else i could think of, prob not much use.

Actually that just gave me a fantastic idea! I was trying to find windows with a u value of 0.8 which was impossible, but now I've changed my floor from suspended to solid and my DER has gone way down! Thank you so much! It's not technically right because the site is so steep it would really have to be suspended, but I can just say that for these calculations I was using the one house that is on the flat bit at the bottom.
Thank you! I'm almost there now. Just got to write a report and do a vertcial section through the entire house showing foundations and floor design and window openings and roof structure and first floor structure and prevention of cold bridging and water penetration... and then an axonometric with primary and secondary and tertiary structure. Shouldn't take too long.

Positive mental attitude. That's the way forward.

Edited because I can't spell. And also to say, the clever website stopped me double posting by "activating flood control." Woo hoo!

whats DER??

so are you now using a ground-bearing slab?

you should post your full height section so we can all see.

surely if its a sloping site you can just proposed a cut/fill exercise to make flat at the appropriate level.

not very economic though, all that material off site with landfill tax, a surveyors nightmare, i see a savings exercise coming on!!

DER - dwelling emission rate (I think). It's to do with energy, carbon zero and all that. The architecture student's nightmare. It's directly related to u values, but also to floor area, orientation, exposure etc...

I am now using a ground bearing slab. Ah crap, does that mean I'm supposed to have raft foundations? I just used strip ones... not hard to change though.

The slope is pretty major and my houses kind of step down it (I think there's a picture around somewhere, maybe on the old rants and raves). I *think* I could do a lot of cutting and filling and put a slab under each one... I don't really know.

I don't have to think about surveyor's problems so I'm OK!

Pics are on this page: http://www.gregorymaguire.com/discussion/ubb/Forum6/HTML/000552-85.html

This is kind of going off topic a little bit...

Rave: my flatmates are watching Rent. They used to laugh at me for watching it all the time, but now they both have copies because they couldn't stand to be without it when we went home at Christmas!

Actually, that's kind of a rant because I'm stuck in my room drawing... but I can hear it and sing along, so that's OK.

*laughs hysterically*

Rip Van Winkle is an old folk tale. It was to say how the Hudson river in New York came about. The tale goes:
(at least the way I heard it)

Rip Van Winkle did nothing all day, it bugged everyone, he just sat and lazed around. One day he escapes his nagging wife by wandering up the mountains. After encountering (I thought it was little goblin men), rumored to be the ghosts of Henry Hudson's crew, who are playing nine-pins, and after drinking some of their liquor, he settles down under a shady tree and falls asleep. He wakes up (I believe it was many years later, a couple decades)years later and returns to his village. He finds out that his wife is dead and his close friends have died in a war or gone somewhere else. He immediately gets into trouble when he hails himself a loyal subject of King George III, not knowing that in the meantime the American Revolution has taken place. An old local recognizes him, however, and Rip's now grown daughter eventually puts him up. As Rip resumes his habit of lazyness and everyone believes his tale.

She just wants to sleep forever and make all the bad go away. I am sorry R18, I had one of those yesterday as well.

I was just telling you what she meant by Rip Van Winkle. It's a folk tale, it's not supposed to make sense. Think of it as a short story if you want.

Rave: The newspaper did make the mistake of calling a member of The Church of Satan a "Devil-worshipper"--LaVeyan Satanists don't believe the Devil literally exists, and so do not "worship" him--but this piece shows a nice little example of tolerance and acceptance.

Let's take a short moment to review Matt's week.

Everything involved with this is a "Rant/Rave?"

Stepfather turned out to be a psycho. Tuesday night my mother decides she, myself, and my younger brother will move the next morning.

We wake up, pack for a couple hours long before anyone should be up, he leaves for work, I leave for exams, little brother leaves for school, mother calls movers and after exams I went "home" to a new apartment. Haven't been back to little Greenbush since then.

Exams all week. First day of exams, two choir exams, a band exam, and a music independanct study exam... very easy.

Next day of exams, AP Calculus, AP English and AP Psychology... Very difficult

Next Day of exams, AP Chem... hardest one yet.Blech...

During the week I managed to work selling disgusting meat in plastic bags to people I hate for about 30 hours. Went to 4 days of exams for about 6 hours a day. Had 12 hours of play practice. Had a twelve hour saturday forensics competion followed by three hours of work and 2 hours of show choir performances. Friday trip to the symphony on my day off, followed by 6 hours of work and 2 hours of sweeney todd at the movie theatre.

It was more or less stressful...

Oooo Morocco. How expensive is it there, for food etc...? Thinking of Marrakech for a city break. I'm going with 6 friends and it's hard to find somewhere none of us have been!

Rave: been to the beach today.

Rave: Pizza Hut tonight.

Rave: there's a sign in the city centre saying "Welcome home King Kev!" (football related). Little thing, made me happy.

Rave: Wicked on friday and Hairspray on saturday, and my friend's cousin is in the ensemble!
