So you're saying you learned that on the dvd right? Not from the "connection" you claimed to have had?

I would really like to know why you said you had the connection if you didn't? Why did you come here asking for clips? I don't understand...

Fabala, and suprisingly they both have the same email address (Fae's in her profile and sadie.rue's on her post.)

I locked a thread in the book forum called "why are you guys all assholes." I'm fairly sure deletion is in order but a pre-emptive lock happened so no flame war started one way or another.

I said friend and not friend, because I noticed the emails too.

I saw the locked thread and I agree it should be deleted.

Okay, guys, I saw this thread, where a girl had trouble understanding some of the book: http://www.gregorymaguire.com/discussion/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001773.html

I realize I'm not a mod, and that I'm one to talk about politeness to newbies, but maybe we need to be a bit more careful? Although I assumed from her language that she was younger too, (her lack of capital I's, for one), and I do think she overreacted, I also think that it's fairly easy for someone to not get the book if they're not the most avid readers. I have friends my age and older who would never be able to comprehend Wicked. And if you're not used to reading complicated books, you're going to be confused.

My point is - maybe we'd better be careful how we put things. Asking someone how old they are seems reasonable, yeah, but we can't assume every member here who types poorly or doesn't get basic concepts is young.

That being said, this is also a perfect example of why language is important on the net. I have to admit, if I see someone who doesn't capitalize, uses liberal amounts of netspeak, and/or comes to a book forum saying they didn't understand 50% of the book, I assume they're young.

But yes, perhaps we need to be more careful. Just a tip? Again, I'm not a mod, but it is something I thought I'd still bring up.

I agree Azaelia. I mean how many of you would think I was fourteen or fifteen if you didn't know I was in my twenties? I know I would.

The way that whole thread went down made me feel very sad.

I'm not entirely sure how Pan could have worded her post much better. She brought up a good point that if you are having a hard time understanding the beginning parts of the book then later on you're going to feel even more lost.

You do have a very good point however.

True, but to me, it seemed she was talking about the poster's "age", and it seems the OP took it that way as well. I just think it might be best to leave comments on age out until we know for sure. I might have just warned that the story gets even more confusing. I mean, if dana 23 had said "I'm eleven", yeah, that's when you say something. (And it does bother me that kids that young are a, reading Wicked, b, going to random messageboards by themselves...)

Unfortunately how are we supposed to know for sure unless we ask (and even then we can't know for sure.) It's a tough call because if some one isn't understanding something it could be related to the fact that they aren't mature enough to get all the underlying tones. And whether we like to admit it or not age is a factor of maturity more often than not.

Well I wasn't saying that Pan was at fault herself. That member did over dramatize things. I just assumed it was a 3rd Sadie Rue persona, or fourth, which was a mistake of my own. Either way I took the poster's post to mean that she wasn't ready to read the book yet but that she still wanted to try. I'm a avid supporter of reading and I guess I figured I might as well try to help if I could.

It just didn't seem like anyone was taking her seriously. That's why I said it made me sad. Not that Pan was at fault, but that nobody seemed to really want to help the girl. Now I know FabFae helped... I guess I was being silly.

Honestly? If you can't get through the first chapter on your own, I'm not gonna help. Put the book down. You aren't ready for it. When you go back later and you have a question about something that is legitimently ambiguous, then I'll join the conversation. I'm sure there are many people on these forums that feel the same. It isn't that we don't want to discuss the book. It's that we don't want to give a blow by blow report on it.

Woah... guess I can't even go to a meeting for work without getting tarred and feathered.

I wasn't implying that the poster is too young. But typically our younger posters are the ones who have a hard time understanding the book. She said she was still in the beginning years of Elphaba, and all her original post said was that she was having trouble understanding it, and needed help, but didn't even explain what is was she wasn't understanding until someone asked her.

It really wasn't her age that I was trying to focus on, but rather, the fact that she didn't understand the first few chapters and that it would only get more difficult from there. Even at 23, I wouldn't change my opinion. All I was saying was is that she might have trouble throughout the entire story because it's very deep and requires more thought than your average "romance" novel.

I'll be the first to admit, I didn't get the first couple of chapters when I first read the book. In fact, I actually put the book down for a while because I couldn't get into it, I couldn't get past the whole Munchkinland scene. I'm glad I gave it another chance, but it wasn't an easy read for me even then, at 20 years old.

Sorry to have caused such commotion all. I'll try to go rectify the situation.

PAN, listen... nobody was tarring and feathering you. I realize you meant well, and yes, many of those members are juvenile teeny boppers. But she wasn't one. I'm not faulting you, I'm just trying to suggest maybe asking questions like that a different way in the future. That's all.

No, no, she was the most accurate. There is a phantom admin who decided.

FabFae. I told you I had a say in it. I didn't decide for sure. I just gave my opinion and it was considered. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. I didn't actually select you I just said you'd do a good job when asked.

Also, PaN is the other Mod with capabilities to contact the admins.

azaelia, i hope i dont offend you with my non-capitalization. i dont do it on purpose, its just how i choose to type when i dont have to do it professionally. i send email to client and vendors all day and i use nice pretty capital letters. but im not the best typer, so it takes a bit of effort from me to do all the nice things. anyway, i hope no one is seriously annoyed by the fact that i ignore capital letters and apostrophes around here.

Thanks for clarifying llk.
That was just my understanding from previous posts around the boards. I remembered something about two of the mods being able to contact the phantom admiin and that we were picked, well suggested by you.

We should come up with a name for the phantom admin. Or does he/she/it already have a name?

I vote for Odin, the All-Seeing Blind Norse God, Father of Thor Thunder-Pants. I mean, Thunder-Hammer. Well, now it just sounds wrong...
Odin kinda fits for the phantom's job description.

Oh, here's my question. (Beware, it's long!) Is it more appropriate to put something down that's meant as sarcastic and put "jk" after it, or write it as "[sarcasm] Example joke here. [/sarcasm]"? Or maybe put a well placed smilie?

The simplified version of it is, "What's good internet sarcasm grammar?"

good work troops! glad we got the taken care. so...there we go.

skittles, for the most part, i dont have any trouble figuring out when someone is being sarcastic or not. it comes with getting to know people. when you make a friend you become accustomed to the way they speak and the tone of thier voice. well, since we cannot hear each other voices on here, naturally we would become accustomed to way someone communicates through typing. so...that is how you know if someone is being sarcastic.

I think the poster had a valid point under all of the chat speak and not so nice way of phrasing it. Not all of it just the part where she said it was in poor taste for a lot of people to post in the signature thread telling another member that their signatures looked bad/horrible (Not pixelated, which was just stating a fact, just the other posters who said they were crappy, which is an opinion, after it) and that stuff like that could hurt the feelings of that poster for no reason. People who thought the signatures were bad obviously weren't going to request one - and there were people who did request - so it seemed sort of mean-spirited. That said I think the argumentative tone in rest of the post may have negated that point. Anyway that's my 2 cents - which I refrained from posting until tempers have cooled so please know that I'm not trying to (re)start anything.

Alright guys, I have my first real issue with wicked_fan. Her new signature reads "Join my site if you are a true wicked fan" with a link to her new forum. This rather annoys me, like it's pretty much saying that the people on this forum aren't "true" wicked fans.

I'm curious to see how other people feel about this...
