Hiya, my name's Aubry, i'm 22, and i'm from a pointy, pretty little place called Cornwall in England.

I first heard about the Wicked musical when I went to NY for a weekend last year, and was interested in the idea of it, but not interested enough to spend a whole load of money to go and see it. I found out about the book when i got back to the UK and loved it! I've since read Mirror Mirror, which i only love way much more!

The notions of Lost and Confessions of an Ugly Step Sister make me go "urg?" though. And Son of a Witch is a sequel... so never mind...

So yeah, been lurking for a while and thought i should say hi.

Hi.

Hi and welcome

I've never been to Cornwall but I would love to go, I know people there and it seems so lovely. I'm in Newcastle which is just about as far away as you could get!

I'm reading Mirror, Mirror again at the moment and I'd forgotten how much I love it. It's definitely up on a level with Wicked for me. I also really like Confessions but I'm not a fan of Lost, I don't really understand that book.

Very nice to meet you, anyway. Another person to add to the English list! That makes it 2... (no, perhaps 3!).

It's probably going to sound weird but I have a fish named Aubrey and it's just neat to meet someone with a name I liked enough to name a pet!

Welcome to the boards!

I noticed that a lot of people were lurkers around here before they actually signed up. I wasn't. I found these forums, loved them, and signed up. I do lurk on other forums... but not this one.

Who else of the older members lurked a while before they joined?

Thanks for the welcome namesake-fish-lady and Geordie munchkin. I'm glad to boost up the English numbers!

I have a friend from Sunderland but that's about as close as my ties with the Tyne go, i'm afraid.

And i've NEVER met another Aubry in my life - (especially considering that it's short for Auberon; my parents are weird, wonderful people), so it's nice to know that there's at least a fish out there to be friends with.

I lurked for a month-ish, maybe? Is that a bit pervy? I dunno.

I've been trying to remember whether I lurked. I think I did, because I remember being a bit scared about posting and trying to follow all the rules.

I'm not actually Geordie, I'm just here for uni. Home town is about an hour north of Manchester, right on the border of Lancashire and Yorkshire.

hello, all.
i'm gabby, i'm 15 and from new jersey. i am an avid reader, writer and musician. i seem to have a lot in common with all you friendly and wise people; i dance hiphop, jazz, and ballet, i play the cello and clarinet for my school's orchestra and marching band, and listen to various types of rock, my favorite being symponic metal or melodic metal, or whatever they are calling it now. i am also a grammar/spelling freak, but i do not like to use capitals (i'm very lazy) when writing or typing. i hope it does not peeve any of you.
i keep a picture of gregory maguire as the screen saver on my cell phone and speak of him in a stalker-like-fashion to my friends when persuading them to read his novels.
i would also like to add that in an epiphanic moment, i realized the other day how important wicked is in my life. while filling out a tedious questionaire for health class, i was stumped by the question "what is your greatest accomplishment?" after rolling my eyes about the sillines of asking a 15-year old what her greatest accomplishment is and then feeling ashamed that i couldn't name one, i realized that my greatest accomplishment would be reading wicked. i may be young, but i feel that understanding wicked has led to so much learning and discovery that it has given me wisdom and also taught me many things about my "inner self," i suppose you could say. i would say that it has influenced my soul, but, in an elphaba-like way, i question the existence of souls.
i hope this post hasn't been too long. i just love this board so much, once i start typing i find it hard to stop .

Welcome Gabby.

I can tell already that you will fit in just fine.

As a sidenote, I consider not playing the cello my first mistake in life. The envy I feel currently is immense. What a gorgeous instrument.

In response to all the posts about lurking... I think I lurked for a day or two if I remember correctly. To be honest, I think it started with me looking for information about the musical. I had recently finished the book during my sophomore year (I am now a senior) and wanted to see the musical but was worried it would be a disappointment. I was hoping for opinions from other who had read the book first. I sure am glad I joined!

if you don't mind me asking, how old are you? you know they say it's never too late...hahah, corny, i know. but you should, it's such a beautiful instrument.

i lurked around for maybe a week before i registered. i've never been a member of a discussion board, and i was quite intimidated by it. i'm so happy i joined, it's great to find people who are as obsessed with wicked and GM as i am.

What part of Jersey are you from Gabby? I grew up in Monmouth county. Area codes 732 and 908. Uh... and in case you DO know the area (I'm from some of the smaller towns.) Red Bank, Fair Haven, and Colt's Neck.

While I know that to the rest of the world dropping my area code would seem silly, us NJers use it as a way of telling where people are from quite a bit. It's like asking which Mall you go to... Or the legendary "exit" question which was always lost on me becuase I used the NJ transit to get anywhere I needed to go.

Yay 908! Do you remember back years ago when they changed the area codes around? I wasn't even in kindergarten yet, I don't think. But you're a little older than me so you might remember it.

Colt's Neck (the town I was born in) is still 908 but the rest of Monmouth co, everything that's not near the Freehold/Asbury Park area, changed to 732. 908 used to be a MUCH bigger area.

I should also admit that I moved away from New Jersey some years ago. It's still home though.

LLK, of course i know those areas! i live in toms river, area codes 732 and 908. i love visiting red bank, and i've been to the monmouth mall a couple times. our mall is the ocean county mall. it is probably the crappiest mall in new jersey. what high school did you nj natives go to? i'm in sophomore year at tr high school east.

Knollwood Middle school
Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School.

And, I LOVE Monmouth mall. I grew up going to that mall.

Red Bank is still my favorite town in the world. Have you ever been to "The New Corner Pizza?" It was my favorite place to eat when I was a kid. I still go there every time I go back. They used to give me free food all the time.

I'm about to be 18. Trust me, it isn't for lack of trying!

I play woodwinds, brass, piano and vocals. I am going to be an oboe major in college. Cello, however is a string instrument. I played guitar for quite a few years, but it unfortunately never really clicked for me like the others did. Apparently strings are not really my thing. However, someday I hope to play the bassoon proficiently which I consider to be the beautiful woodwind equivalent of the cello.

hahahah.

wehttaM, i wouldn't say that just because you had difficulty with the guitar you wouldn't be good at another string instrument like the cello. i must say, and i don't mean this to sound like bragging, but i am a pretty good cello player. 2nd chair in my school's orchestra, 1st chair next year. but for the life of me, i can't learn guitar. i've tried several times, but never got the hang of it, except for a small part of "malaguena" that my dad taught me.
i have high regard for those who are accomplished players of the bassoon, though i have yet to meet one in the toms river area that doesn't sound like they are squeezing the life out of a goose.

i must visit red bank soon, i hope they'll have one of those "obama for yo mama" shirts in funk and standard hahah.

Well it depends Munchkin. Here in Missouri 417 is a widely used area code. More populated places have to have more numbers.

Pan, what exit is a Jersey thing. It means what exit off the GSPW (aka, the parkway.) Instead of asking what town someone was from- you ask what exit and get the info that way. It doesn't work 100% of the time- for example, I lived off of exit 127, but I was over and hour from the parkway.

Val (sorry I can't spell and it's easier to abbreviate- Ocean county mall is pretty nice compared to Phillipsburg Mall. Any mall is nice compared to that! I <3 Cherry Hill mall too. Although the Hamilton Mall was pretty nice too (I went to college at Stockton College, in Pomona, if you know where it is)

I'm pretty sure that I was exit 109 but I could be wrong. I never really did drive it.

Cherry Hill mall is one of my favorites. Monmouth just because I've been going there since before I could walk. And Freehold Raceway Mall for all of my big shopping trips. Freehold Raceway is huge... it could so eat Monmouth in one bite.

Gabby you're making me miss Funk and Standard. And the pizza place I was talking about is just around the corner from there. Actually, I think if you walk from there to the end of the block, towards W. Front/First St. (it's First in Fair and West Front in Red Bank) it's right there on the corner.

Now there's something I can identify with.

As far as the exit thing goes... I'm like you Minxy, I couldn't use that analogy, because he's not off the parkway, he's off the turnpike. If I had to pick one, it'd be exit 67 or 63, but again, it's about an hour west of the coast.

Hey Thanks Plant a Note! I've only just seen you message. judging by your picture you're a yoga-y person. I'm a teacher, and after i qualified "Zen" became a bit of a running mock nickname for me among my friends! But they are unbendy loosers who wouldn't know a sun salutation if it snapped their hamstrings so i forgive them.

Hahaha. That's classic, zen. I am currently in teacher training as well! I am so excited to get certified and begin teaching. My friends sound quite like yours, though I do have some friends that practice yoga, none of them even know what a sun salutation is. They just do the movements as they're told, hehe. I actually went to a workshop yesterday where I first tried full handstands and variated headstands (without the support of a wall). It was quite the experience!

That's really cool to have another yogini aboard.

Yes, that's right. And Valenticed, I wouldn't even know where to start! Besides, I'm not really one of those people. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner live in Boston, too, but to me, celebrities want to be able to live their lives like everyday people, so I wouldn't be one to search them out if they just want to be left alone.
