Hi. I'm Tori. I'm 14 and I'm totally and completely obsessed with Wicked. I just figured I would write this considering a moderator asked everyone to in the Wicked the Musical Forum. By the way I live in the United States in case anyone cared, because I think some of you might live in the UK?

After reading the rules, I just wanted to say that the attitude toward new posters here is very off-putting - for lack of a better term. Not every newbie is a complete moron who is trying to crash your party or a puppy who needs to be reminded not to piddle on the carpet. Just because people have been on a forum longer doesn't make them or what they have to add to a discussion automatically more important.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but I've been lurking here for almost a year and those greeting messages with the rules posted in them to every new member regardless if they broke a rule or not seem very patronizing to me. Aside from that I love this forum. I hadn't joined before because of all the spam, so I'm glad that seems to have been taken care of. Anyway, I'm going to be a good newbie now and participate in share time.

My name is Jen; I'm a 22 year old with a shiny new Bachelor's degree in Computer Science. I've been an avid reader for as long as I can remember. Wicked is one of my favorite books, but I am equally in love with the musical. I speak my mind, love good discussions, and don't proof-read my posts (so I'll probably commonly be an offender of bad spelling and/or grammar - I apologize in advance . . .)

How are people supposed to know the rules without being told? If no one told people that chatspeak is generally looked down upon here- then when it was pointed out to them they could say, "I wuz neva todl that! dont be mean cuz.." etc etc.

So to be fair we give them the heads up. Unfortunately we've had a lot of problems with trolls in the past that have stemmed from those kinds of problems.

We moderators are woefully ill equiped for the most part. I think a lot of trouble could be spared if we had a reliable way to contact people outside of the main forum- so we could nicely approach them about the more frivolous stuff.

When you think about it this forum has many parallels with Oz. You have your Wizard (Gregory Maquire) this unseen presence that drives us all to post. Then there are the Madame Morribles (Moderators) who make sure the Wizard is pleased by doing his bidding and interacting with the masses. You senior members are the Gale Force; you have no real power but you’ve got your swords and you aren’t afraid to use them! The citizens of Oz (regular members) go about their business posting, some maybe trying to get in good with the Gale Force so they’ll point their weapons elsewhere while others kiss up to Madame Morrible so perhaps someday she’ll make them an Adept! Then there are us Posters (Animals) who stand out from the others because of our physical appearance – the Junior Member title under our names. We have been branded.

Some Ozians forget we are Posters instead of posters (people who don’t have usernames). We Posters have the ability to type just like the rest of you yet, like the Wizard, you have enforced banns – why can’t I as a newbie member have a signature? – placed us under constant surveillance and scrutiny by the Gale Force, and discounted our opinions on the rules that govern use, as the rules clearly state: do not question the great and powerful rules of Oz. The thoughts of us lower beings are irrelevant.

Have you all been discussing and reading so much into Wicked that you are subconsciously/consciously trying to replicate it? Will all of us poor Posters be demoralized into silence, until we stop speaking out and become posters – sorry, mute Posters. Where’s Elphaba when you need her?

yah!!! wen elfie cumz u will b sooooo sry.

Now in all seriousness I hope this post doesn't come off wrong, I saw room for a comparison and ran with it. For the most part I do think the moderators are plenty tolerant and I have no problem with the rules - most seem to be common sense, just when they are interjected into the middle of threads all the time it kinda distracts from the actual discussion. I think a lot could be gained from a PM system on the board.

I actually kinda liked the comparison- even if I don't agree completely.

Although I think GM would be more like the Unnamed God or Lurline, since the Wizard was a more definate figure than GM is...

i have only read wicked once, never seen the musical, never read the original books and am not crazy about the movie. i like GM's other books far better than wicked.

anyway, most of us didnt choose to be moderators, we were just appointed. we also have no control over the fact that new members cannot have a signature. we dont have any control over the fact that you even are a 'junior member'. it doesnt take long to become a full member anyway. and i am NOT anything like madame morrible...she has bad hair.

In all honesty... I don't think we've done that in a long time. Back when the moderators weren't being moderatorly and we had the upsurging of spam we had to do whatever was necessary to maintain some sort of control. Otherwise we surely would have lost these boards. I really do feel like now that we have a modeartion team that I greatly respect and admire (I adore my fellow mods) things have been a little different. I know that I'm still pretty passionate about keeping things the way we want them to be... but I have never... never given the rules to someone new before they had made an infraction. So I respect that you have another opinion on the issue and I appreciate you bringing it to light. Now that a member has told us they don't like the practice... maybe we can cut it out.

I'm glad that you finally decided to join... and I hope that you feel happy and welcome and stay for a long time.

JenM9, I actually didn't know that junior members aren't allowed a siggy. Did you guys (other mods)? In any event, when our board was wiped clean of the spam, our mysterious unnamed "admin" (AKA the guy who created the board as a contractor but not employed directly by GM or the publishers) came about and made some changes that he liked, yet we're still working with someone at Harper Collins that will hopefully be able to get us just where we need to be, as a whole board.

I personally don't like have to reiterate the rules for every new person every time someone joins. It certainly gets redundant and hopefully soon we'll be able to employ a "sticky" feature that will allow us to just post them once at the top and leave them there.

I hope that you do find you enjoy it here over time. It can be daunting at first, but we do enjoy new people who add to the total IQ of this place.

I have no idea what the conversation was about, but I found it mildly amusing that Munchkinman was telling someone to use the edit button "like he just did", when he actually didn't use the edit button and double posted. It's not really funny, I just haven't slept in 3 days and emotions are all over the place.

Does anyone else find it surreal that Munchkinman, a new member who is 9 years old, was telling a mod to use the edit button?

Hi, all. I am a 26 year old woman from western Massachusetts. I recently finished my master’s in education. I am a social justice activist, teacher, and artist.

I’m a long-time lurker around here. I read Wicked a few years ago and fell in love. After I finished the book, I wanted more. Hence, I found myself on the boards reading analysis (and argument and sarcasm) about Wicked. I’ve since read Son of a Witch, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, and Mirror, Mirror. None of Maguire’s books speak to me the way that Wicked and Son of a Witch do, so you’ll most likely find me on one of those two forums. I figured it was time to stop hiding in the branches of the willow tree listening to your discussions and to join in the fun. Besides, I have a few ideas that I don’t think I’ve yet seen on the numerous pages of this forum.

So, it’s time to test the waters, to dip my foot in. I’m just a bit afraid you all will bite my toes off. I’ll try not to take it personally (the sarcasm, that is); though, please leave my toes intact. Feel free to nibble. I enjoy a good dialogue.

Especially if you are going to bring fresh new ideas to the table. We can tell you're intelligent so that's one less hoop we'll make you jump through.

Enjoy it here!

Hi all. This may be a little late, but my name is Nina and I'm 13 years old. I live in the Philippines with my family. There's no need to make "easy" sentences for me just for my age or nationality, because I learned English in school and I have absolutely no problem with it.

I've been wanting to become a writer since I was four. But at the moment, I'm not always online since I've been jumping around taking test after test so that my parents can find a suitable high school for me. But I can always squeeze in enough time for my computer. Haha.

I found Wicked in a bookstore when I went to reserve an advanced copy of Harry Potter 7. One of my friends had been raving about the musical for weeks and she mentioned that it was based on a book. I was interested, so I bought it. I've loved Gregory Maguire's novels ever since, though the writing style I've made for myself isn't based on his own.

I hope I can make a lot of friends here, though it looks like I've already lost a few. Haha. :P

There had been a few guys that I had been talking to for a while online (they were 3 friends) and when I met them, I called all of them but one by their user names for a very very long time. The only reason I called one by his real name is because I was dating him.

And they pretty much called me Chicky (my sn at the time was chicky_me_nj.)

Hello! My name is Jennie, 35, and I have just finished Wicked. Picked it up at a airport bookstore - oh how I wished that flight lasted longer! I could not put this book down. I call my friends to tell them something from it only to realize that it isn't real. I sought out this board because I was trying to clarify some things that seemed foggy to me. Right away, I knew it was the perfect place for that. I am excited to read his other books, although I will likely have to wait for my next break as I am finishing up my master's degree right now. But what a book to fill that break with!
