It bugs me too. Ever since Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans my school has been run down with people like that. They just came up to my school and messed everything up. They always make fun of my freinds and me just because we dress Prepy. No one can make fun of them because they have a big gang at our school. If ya mess with one of 'em you mess with all of 'em.

On the topic of the Goth/Emo thing...

My sister, Hannah, has branded herself "Fat Emo" and she goes around advirtising that's what she is. There are pictures of her and our youngest sister,Claire, with face paint on that says "Fat Emo" and "Sister of Fat Emo" and this bothers me. First of all, Claire is only eleven years old and it really bugs me that Hannah has attached such a stigma to herself and that she's teaching Claire to do the same thing. Hannah's teaching Claire all sorts of things that she shouldn't know about. Hannah is overweight, yes, but she acts as though it gives her some sort of license to behave like a hudlum and to teach the baby of the family to do the same.

Also I'd like to take right now to rant about the education kids these days are getting. And, no, I'm not talking about in the classroom.

My sisters do things and know about things that would even make me blush.

It just makes me so mad. Why are kids growing up so young these days?

I agree. Last night my friends and I went to a friend's ice-show. Her cousin was there. He's eight and on the car ride there my friend and I were just joking around and he starts singing. Rap songs, that, I highly doubt he even knows the meaning of. He was trying to act all 'gangster' and that pissed me off. (Plus he looked just plain stupid.)

I just don't think people should be spending 40 dollars on a shirt, or thirty dollars a pair of sunglasses, it's just not worth it.

*grumbles* Society has sunk quite low.

I had a question but it's sunk to the back of my mind.

Those people who go out of their way to make people notice their emo-dark-oh-im-a-teenager-therefore-i-am-going-through-crap-ness do annoy me a lot. The music they listen to annoys me even more. "Gansters" are just glorified wanna-be pirates. Really.

Damn pop culture.

And thanks for the advice MH.

I have a question. This isn't really weird, but I need it answered.

I finished my manuscript and I wanted to give it to someone as an end of the year present. So I don't know whether to give it to them on Friday, or tomorrow or the last day of school. Or what.

I'd give it to them tommorow...

I think that's a good idea... that way you have a few days for them to digest the gift and give you a proper thank you... not to mention it doens't look like you're embarassed about it.

Well, I mean, I was thinking about it Friday. You know?

Because, knowing them, they would defintely pull me aside and at least say SOMETHING during the day, ask me to talk to them when the day's over.

So I don't know!

I have a question, but it isn't very weird.

I've been studying Japanese on and off for a few years now, and I really want to buckle down and learn the language (if for nothing but to ace my Japanese class in my Junior year of college). I've tried books, but I think I need something more interactive. I've seen commercials of this "Rossetta Stone" software all over, and I was wondering if anyone had it or is familiar with it, and if it's worth the $300.

I'm afraid I have no idea... I have a Japanese friend, want to borrow him?

I have a question which I'm a bit worried about asking. I don't want to upset anyone, but I'm really not sure what to do and it's not something people in England can really help me with.
The way the dates have worked out for my holiday, I'm going to be in New York on 9/11 (I only realised this morning, and we've been planning it for a week). I feel kind of awkward about it, I don't want to be running round the city like a tourist when it's such a... memorable day for so many people. I want to go to a memorial service or something, but I don't know where/when they would be, and also I'd feel like I was intruding. I figure if I do that, and maybe go to a museum or St Patrick's, walk round Central Park... I don't know. I just don't want to be going up the Empire State Building or shopping or anything.
There isn't really a question... just, has anyone been in New York at a time like that? I can't imagine what it will be like.

I was in NY on 9/11/06. It was fine.

If you're worried about some kind of terorist attack, don't. An attack could just as easily happen today as it could on 9/11.

I could't tell you about any of the memorial services, though, because I've never been to one.

...

How much would it cost to rent your Japanese friend for the summer ?

Okay! I ahev yet another weird question...

My parents are taking me (and my brother and sister) to France for my graduation!

The only problem is, I hate flying. After getting over the initial anxiety of taking off (when an accident is most likely to occur) I get incredibly bored for the eight hours I'm sitting there doing nothing.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any OTC tranquilizers or sleeping aids that might help me. Without the risk of dependency.

I'm sure we could come to a very reasonable agreement

I'm not worried about a terrorist attack at all - that could happen any time, any place. I just want to be respectful. I guess I'll just see what happens; go with the flow.

Lucky you! Oh, Caitlin went and my friend went and I am quite jealous.

Uhm, well, Melatonin is nondependant and an anxiety reliever, I take it before exams, and it helps me relax. So try that.

Lately I've been making a lot of changes in my life. I've lost a bunch of weight (the healthy way, through diet and exercise) and I've been really hacking down on some of the responsibilities in my life with college coming up. However, as I do this I've been noticing some other changes.

Everytime people ask me to hang out or do anything, I have no interest in spending time with anyone. I just want to stay home and do other things by myself.

As a highschooler obviously a lot of my peers are getting into drugs/sex/alcohal and these always bothered me, but now I can't seem to let it go. I've found myself literally hating people for it.

I've been sort of pushing away the friends I have, and getting closer to other people (still very decent respectable people mind you).

Are these just me getting older and changing naturally. Or am I doing something unhealthy. I don't like to be crabby towards people, but a lot of people are just angering me a bunch.

I can't seem to balance the different aspects of my life well...

If you can find a question in this, I'd happily take advice.

Thanks

I have a question.

One of my friends at school has been in the habit of self-harm and has just started not eating for up to a week at a time. She told me in class this arvo but refuses to admit that she needs help and that her "starving periods" could well lead to an eating disorder. "it won't happen to me" she says but i have another friend who ended up 2 years in hospital with an eating disorder. and she said exactly the same thing.
what do i do?
do i tell the parents -who I've never even met before?
do i tell a trusted teacher at school?
i don't want to sit back and do nothing but at the same thime don't want to blow things up and never trust me again.
sorry about the lack of capitalization.
thanks heaps.

Screw the trust, save a life. Tell someone; if you don't know about the parents, go for a teacher or guidance counselor because you aren't sure of whether or not the parents will deny it and flip on you. A familiar adult who you can trust to handle this is what you need.

You might no want to tell the parents, at least yet. If you have music, books, movies, whatever, where self-harm isn't glorified or even showed in a 'this-can-really-hurt-you-and-is-not-cool' light, just in a 'it-really-doesn't-make-you-special-or-make-people-like-you-more' way. If your you think your friend really wants control, indirectly (that's important!) show/tell yout friend things that show how much you care about her and what could happen to her. Sometimes making your friend feel kind of guilty helps make them stop, but sometimes this has an opposite effect. Make sure she knows that you really care about her, and when she hurts herself she also hurts you.
Tell her about your other friend, but try not to show all of your fears, you don't want her to stop telling you about it, because then you don't know what is going on.
I hope something I said helped. there are some sites you can look at.

Okay, I need more advice.

Now that I am eighteen, I am planning on changing my surname, mainly because it's long, hard to spell, and (in my opinion) ugly. Also, I hate the notion of surnames; to me it's just patriarichal bullshit.

Anyways, I have narrowed it down to three names:

Blake
-Pros: It means both "pale" and "black"; the duality in this name is so intriguing and meaningful to me. Also, my favorite poem is "The Tyger" which is written by Blake.
-Cons: It's common.

Christian
-Pros: It's classy, contemporary and it has the same number of letters as my old last name.
-Cons: It has overwhelming religious connotations.

Wilde
-Pros: It's unique, sophisticated and it's the same name as Oscar Wilde.
-Cons: It lacks a certain je ne se que.

Any input would be appreciated. Any.

I don't know your middle name, but going off first and the new last choices I would judge a lot by sound.

I personally think Alex(ander)Blake sounds the best. Alex(ander) Wilde (which not considering sound at all is probably my favorite) sounds second best. and personally I don't much care for Christian at all.

*prays he remembered YtH's first name and isn't thinking of someone else.*

I don't know why you want to change your name... but I'm with MTO, I like Wilde the best. By far.

I have a weird question though.

Do you speak with accents? I don't mean can you immulate them, but do you have them?

I remember one time deciding with Molly that Acey was our sexiest member bescuase he was witty, attractive, and probably had a british accent.

Well I was just talking with someone and they, knowing I lived a while in TX, wondered if I had a Texan accent. I don't. I'm pretty "Standard American" but I grew up in New Jersey, and you can tell. I say 'wouder' and 'Dwag' and when I'm especially angry I slip right back into my Yankee accent and you'd sware I never left the north.

I've lived in NC for 7 or 8 years now and I haven't adopted the lingo or the accents. I'm still very much a yankee in my speach.

So, as for getting to know each other a little better you can add that to one of those things to know about me. I speek like a yankee. If we run into each other on the street ever, or happen to get up for coffee sometime, I'll be talking at you like a northerner.

Hey thanks OtM and Elphie. Advice appreciated.

As for accents...I'm Australian but I don't rekon i have an distinct accent. I'm not sure if I really fit in with the steriotyped Aussie. I love my sport and I love sunday arvo barbies but i'm not a country person. I used to live there then i moved when i was quite little so i've grown up with city influences.

I love the name Wilde. So I say that one.

I don't think I have an accent, the only accent I adapt is when I get really angry I start to talk really fast and slip into a yiddish accent with lots 'eh's and 'huh's.

I know a fair amount of people from New Jersey, and they all have an accent including a lot of my family members.

but me? Nope.

I have a proper northern british accent. Very common. Although I do speak a bit nicer at uni! Everyone else seems to talk so posh I can't help it.

Question: when you use the term Yankee, who are you referring to? I mean, what area of America? (I know nothing about the USA. I am learning a lot on here!)

Well personally I have never used the term yankee.

But the general idea is historically yankee is refering to someone from New England but after the civil war the area kind of swelled into anyoe from New England, Mid-Atlantic, and the upper Great Lakes states. Its steryotypical that southerners would call people in the north yankees usually as an insult. But I have never heard anyone use the word yankee in real life except maybe when their talking about the musical Damn Yankees or the Civil War, so...yah lol

As for accents go, I used to have a boston accent but my parents made me take speech therapy and get rid of it, but I sometimes slip back into it when I get upset or im not thinking or talking quickly. :)

Yes, MtO, my name is Alex .

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.

Oh, and, I don't really have an accent; not a NEw York accent, anyway. I do, however, speak with a bad British accent when I'm with my British friend.

I use the term Yankee all the time. I'm a "Damn Yankee" as my friend's dad calls me because I came to the south and never went home.

I only use the term though because that's what people down here call me, it's in mock insult, but I'm proud of my Jersey heritage.

I guess it would be more accurate to say I speak like I'm from New Jersey. Because I do do that. 100%

I kinda knew it was your name from the whole Alexamegan incident. However as i was typing a small thought kept coming to me, how awkward would it be if I said Alex like five times and it turned out that I was thinking of a different member or something. So even though I was convinced it was your name, I had to check to make sure because otherwise I would have geeked out or something.

I have been planning on changing my name since my parents divorce. I want nothing to do with my father or his name, and my mother is taking up her fiances name when they get married. About one more year, and I'm definetly going to change it.

Last but not least, I definetly think you should speak with an "Audrey" accent from Little Shop. How cool would that be!

I love Matt(hew) but Lucas is totally bland and I will only see one more relative (besides my brothers)with the name Lucas in my entire life, it is my dad and I have no interest in being associated with him.

I've been thinking for months on what would be a great last name, but I can't really come up with anything I especially like...
