As celebrities go, Chelsea Clinton is pretty classy. But I definitely see your point - neither of them has done anything to really warrant fame, other than have famous parents. Why should that mean anything? I'd really hate to grow up in the public eye. IP: Logged |

Kike, why do you "hate" them? IP: Logged |

i agree with you muse that twitter is not a reputable news source at all...unless you're talking about TMZ. but i have to say, a little boy from Canada got a replacement custom wheelchair this week because people went mad on twitter ranting that air canada busted his original chair (which is true). so in that sense, twitter is good, but again...not as a news source. on the topic of "celebrity"...i want to express an opinion here and i hope everyone will understand that i'm not trying to bash the USA and i'm not trying to compare my country to your country. i just do not like how politics in the US are so celebri-tised (is that a word?). like when your last election was happening, everything was all about fame and whos the best looking and who has the most celebrities behind them and stuff like that. im not there, so please understand this is just how it appears from my side. it just concerns me that people might be voting for their President based on how cool their commercials are or what movie stars support them (i;m not saying Obama shouldnt be there, just wanna say that). in canada, our Prime Minister is not a model or really all that good looking. we vote for whichever party we agree with the most and its cut and dry. its business. its not celebrity. again, not trying to say "my dad is stronger is than your dad", this is just how things appear to me and i don't necessarily thinks its right to make politics into a celebrity contest. anyway, i apologise if i offended anyone and i welcome any rebutals and other opinions. ------------------ IP: Logged |

It's not just politics; everything these days is trail-by-media. It's all about who has the best publicist, the best photo ops, the best sound bights. I think it is an absolute joke that Obama was on The View. The View? COME ON!! Where is the dignity, I appreciate that the president needs to reach the masses and he needs to be in touch with the common man but honestly appearing on any television program really is just setting the bar so so low. And it's happening here too, our new female prime minister was a show so loosely based on current affairs its embarrassing. It usually exposes con men and email scammers and they care little for facts either. Her opposition was on a show called "Hey Hey it's Saturday" which airs on a Wednesday night (can you believe it!?) and that is even worse. Where is the pride? Where is the dignity? I am not saying our leaders need to act like they are better than us but they should have limits. I don't like the tabloid media; I don't like how important celebrity has become. I don't like that celebrity's divorce rumours are now a part of the evening news. I am waiting for the pendulum to swing the other way and for people to finally step up and say "We don't CARE if Brad and Angelina are rumoured to be splitting... AGAIN, we want real news!" Ok... end rant LOL (OH! and hope I don't offend anyone either, not my intention!) [This message has been edited by muse1176 (edited 08-06-2010).] IP: Logged |

Have you seen Bill Clinton or George Bush, Helen? Neither are particularly good looking. But I agree with you to an extent. People vote for the wrong reasons. Lack of education about important matters, lack of knowledge on how to research outside of the media. The people who voted (either for, or against) Obama because of his skin color worry me- as do those who would or wouldn't vote for Clinton because she was a woman. Kids who blindly follow their parent's political choices without making up their own minds, or maybe ones who follow their friend's. My politics vary a great deal from my parent's, and some of my friends. (Don't ask, I'm not gonna share my thoughts on them! Polite conversation and all that!) IP: Logged |

Minxy you are correct about Clinton and Bush not being all that good looking. i think i just used that as an example to show how politics is turning into celebrity. wasnt a very valid point. anyway, i'm glad i got my point across and made sense. it is very disappointing the way politics uses...abuses media. Political figures should appear on news programs, not The View. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I disagree. I think that they shouldn't use the media the way they do to get elected. But Obama being on the view can be a good thing. (I didn't watch, so I can't judge fairly.) I think the US needs to really do away with the restrictive two party system and open up more options. IP: Logged |

quote: I didn't watch, either, but it sounds like a decent idea to me. I think it's important for politicians to seem accessible. That's not to say that they should "dumb down" anything they say. Not at all. I just want to feel like politicians are in touch with the people they represent. The View has enormous demographics, and maybe by appearing on the show, Obama is managing to reach some people who wouldn't otherwise pay him any attention. quote: more than two parties can be good. like you said, more options. but it can also be not so good. in Canada we have...oh...at least 4 different political parties. more than that because some people run independantly. anyway, i do like having the options because not everything is black and white. but at the same time, i think our last 3 elections have ended up with a minority government. and that means we have elections way too often in an effort to get a majority government. and that means money being spent on elections way. too. often. its kind of annoying. but again, i do appreciate actually having the options when we vote. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Since we're on the topic of politics: Does anyone like--key word: like--Sarah Palin? She is outrageous in her tirades. I swear, if freedom of speech wasn't allowed, she would've been in cuffs like the first time she opened her mouth. And she says Barack Obama doesnt have the guts like a KKK member. Who does that?!?! Who says our president should be more braver like a racist person? It doesn't make sense to me, and maybe she doesn't even know how crazy she sounds. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I do not. I can not stand the stupidity of "I know about Russia because I can see it from my house!" Really? Dumb *expletive deleted* IP: Logged |

quote: aw, i hate to so this because you know i love you WitchBoy and i am not usually one to pick too much on typos etc. but i just LOVE the use of "more braver". on the subject of Sarah Palin...being Canadian I do not not know much about here. most of what i hear is similar to what you guys ar talking about now. about crazy things she says, etc. as a politician i dont know much about her either. although i've watched a few interviews with her and I gotta say...as a person, she may not come off as the sharpest knife in the drawer, but gosh darn it! if i ever needed a drinking buddy or someone to have a good conversation with...she seems like not too bad a person to have to hang out with. ------------------ IP: Logged |

A definite pet peeve of mine is when I'm walking behind someone incredibly slow. Even just watching slow-walking people annoys me. Walk with purpose! IP: Logged |

Biggest pet peeve: when someone is insecure and they bag on them self constantly just so people they're with can tell them it's not true. If that's the way you achieve confidence, you're doing it wrong. IP: Logged |

helenbooktrip Moderator |
ouch. somtimes people don't realise that they are doing that. maybe they're just tired of the way life is going and don't know how to deal with it, so they vent to their friends in hopes of getting some decent advice. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Well, that's a different story. I was thinking more along the lines of physical appearance. And I know, even then it's a little harsh. But when someone says, "I'm so ugly, nobody would ever want to be with me" and I feel like it isn't coming from a sincere place, I can't help but get annoyed. IP: Logged |

I know : O like on facebook this really pretty girl will say "Im ugly", just means she wants billions of people to comment on her status, another peeve, hmmmmm, whenever I watch a stupid movie, it ruins my night. IP: Logged |
