Impulse, by Ellen Hopkins. If you haven't already guessed by now she is my new obsession/new favorite author. This one is about three teens in a psychiatric hospital.

Vanessa is beautiful and smart, but her secrets keep her answering the call of the blade." Her mom has an angel that only she can see. Shes Schizophrenic and bipolar and sometimes freaks out and hits people around her including Vanessa. She cut a little too deep and her eight year old brother found her and got the grandma who they where living with.

Tony, after suffering a painful childhood, can only find peace through pills. *SPOILER* (if you care) Tony was raped by his mom's boyfriend as a child and, as a result, thinks he's gay. That changes when he falls in love with Vanessa.

And Conner, outwardly , has the perfect life. Bit a little deeper and find a boy who is in constant battle with his parents, his life, himself. His parents want him to be perfect and his twin sis is the popular one at school. All that pressure gets to him and he shoots himself in the chest, thought that would kill him faster. and his mom found him but was more worried about blood on her shirt and new carpet than the son.

In one instant each of these young people decided enough was enough. They grabbed the blade, the bottle, the gun--and tried to end it all. Now they have a second chance , and just maybe, with each other's help, they can find their way to a better life--but only if they're strong and can fight the demons that brought them her in the first place.

This book makes me see people who commited suicide and cut in a new light. I understand a lot better now. I still think emo people are annoying and shouldn't whine about everything. But now i just feel sorry for them.

Finished My Sister's Keeper a couple hours ago. Compelling, but not particularly well-written. It just seemed like a weird amalgam of two different stories - the cancer storyline was commendably original, but the subplot with the lawyer...to be frank, that was just piss-poor.

Since Les Mis has been kicking my butt, I've decided to take a break by switching over to children's novels haha. Been reading a trilogy by Linda Buckley-Archer. The first was The Time Travelers, book one in the Gideon Trilogy; then The Time Thief, book two; then I'm finishing up the last, which is The Time Quake.

On the covers of the books, the comments chosen to represent its quality always compare it to J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter. Personally, I don't think it's anywhere near as brilliant as Harry Potter. But as someone who loves to read just about anything, so long as it's interesting, this series certainly caught my attention. The literary style isn't very difficult because it's directed at preteens and maybe even a little younger, but it's a pleasant read with an intriguing story.

If you're bored and want to read leisurely, this is a good choice, in my opinion.

I'm being a total geek and reading a book published in 1947 about the history of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane (London). Next I have one called "Modern Theatre Construction" from 1916!

I'm a bit annoyed that I only found these recently as they would have been perfect for my dissertation (which was about theatres constructed between 1870 and 1910) but it's inspiring me to expand my dissertation into a book.

witchboy, I recommend The Secret Circle by L.J Smith. Awesome book. I know you didn't ask or anything but i thought you might like it.

To anyone who likes or used to like twilight (like me) i strongly recommend Hush,Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick. Instead of vampires there are angels. The story is much stronger and enticing.

newbreed - have you read any of this other books? its amazing, because he ties all the character in together, so someone from Dirty Job will also appear in Coyote Blue as well as his (amazing) vampire series (3 books). And the book Lamb shars some characters with The Stupidest Angel.

i am currently re-reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - yes, I am reading these two books at the same time. for the ten thousanth time.

I only read the first book of the Gideon Trilogy... I didn't like it. It's nowhere near as good as Harry Potter, and it's insulting to J.K. Rowling to compare it to H.P. I don't like any of the books they say are like H.P. (ex. that series with Charlie bones) To add to my original list, I also just started reading Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass as a refresher... I'm doing a character study on the Queen of Hearts/Red Queen.

am currently reading Tyra Bank's new book Modelland which is reeeeeallyyyy good! it's about these models called the Intoxibellas, and they each have a special power and each yr they pick seven new Intoxibellas (called the 7Seven) to train at Modelland and become an Intoxibella. the Intoxibellas are the only famous ppl in the world and everybody wishes they were one! (there's a guy model college called Bestosterone, but Bellas (girl model students) treat them like accessories, bc the girls are the show, not the boys.) and every yr there's supposed to be a Triple7, an Intoxibella with all seven powers, but ever since Ci-L (the last Triple7) went missing, there hasn't been another Triple7. this book is soooo good, he he he...!!!

Okay, Okay... I assumed you'd seen it, I was using the question to rave about it! Lol. But seriously, it's AMAZING!!! Can't wait for it to come out on DVD! (I have all the rest!) Did you happen to catch the exhibition while it was in New York??? It was, like, the coolest thing ever! (but they wouldn't let you take pics.)

Ouch... I flew up there in August so I could see Wicked (again!) because I hadn't seen Teal Wicks yet, (she's really good by the way, but no one will ever best Idina Menzel!) and I happened to notice that it was there and decided to check it out. Note: always buy your Broadway tickets at the 30% off price behind the red stairs in times square.

It was also cool because I also got to see How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, partially because my husband wanted to see it, but mostly because Daniel Radcliffe plays the lead role until December!

Finally finished Modelland. that was a cool book, with a good cliff-hanger at the end. yaw I'm totally frustrated that they jumped in a portal and that was the end but I cannot wait for the next book! now I'm reading Passion, the third book in a series about fallen angels and a girl who dies the same day in all her past lives but somehow this lifetime is different. its really cool, I get kinda whoozy when they talk about ppl bleeding to death tho heehees.

One: Do you guys like "problem books" like books about people with issues. Or powerful, strong, but kind of sad books?

And phanee, have you read any books by Ellen Hopkins?

AMAZING! You know how witchboy love lady gaga, Ellen Hopkins is my equivalent of that. I extremely recommend reading Crank, Glass, and Fallout in that order. They're a trilogy about the authors daughter's meth addiction and Fallout is about her daughter's children. Then Burned, it's about an abusive mormon family. One of my favorites was Tricks. Dark, powerful, and amazing. Though you probably wouldn't like it because it's about teenage prostitutes. But it's amazing though!!! The best thing about it is when i get the books i read them in one sitting for hours straight. And i think it's because it's like an activity to read it. Because the entire book is written in poetry. I know it sounds weird but it's cool. Oh and she just released one more for you, an adult book about three women going through a mid life crisis. That one is called Triangles.

Those all sound like books I would like! I thought when you said something about characters with problems you meant minor, stupid problems, like "omigosh nobody wants to go 2 prom with me" or "my mom embarrassed me and now my life is over!" because those are just petty and I can't get into those books. I'm more into books about truly life-changing internal conflicts, or battling some kind of force that wants to do something bad.

Look her books up at your library. They change how you view many things. She is my all time favorite author. She also has Impulse which is about three suicidal teenagers in a place called Aspen Springs which has a companion novel called Perfect. But read Impulse first. And Identical which is about twins. The ending will blow your mind! Best ending ever. I think that's all of them.

Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods are also AMAZING, both with music by Stephen Sondheim... He's pretty amazing and has done the music for TONS of musicals!!!

I just finished Sisterhood Everlasting, because I adored the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants books in middle school and I couldn't not see how the girls grew up.

Currently reading The Uncoupling, by Meg Wolitzer. A modern-day version of Lysistrata, the Greek play in which women ended a war their husbands were fighting in by going on a sex strike. I love twisted or modern version of classic stories - hence my love for Wicked.

I have dibs on my library's very first copy of Out of Oz the very first day it comes in. I've already called to reserve it. IT'S NOT HERE YET.
