Welcome to the board, Pat f! Of course, I don't know how qualified I am to do that... I've only been here about a month and a half. Still, it's nice to see that this board still gets new members! I'm waiting and waiting and waiting for my copy of Out of Oz to come in... In the meantime, I'm getting killed by Great Expectations and I just read this book called Wings by Avrillyne Pike (I'm not really sure how you spell her first name, but that looks about right.) It's pretty good, I guess, but very weird... It's about this girl that finds out she's a fairy. It kind of just... ends... without her choosing between the fairy boy she loves and the human boy she also loves. And she feels guilty kissing both of them behind the other's back but does it anyway. I say, you want a decent fairy story, try Gossamer by Lois Lowry or Peter Pan or something. (my only issue with Gossamer is that it's very short, and they technically aren't fairies; they're dream-givers.) ------------------ IP: Logged |

Anyone ever read anything by Mahfouz like the Cairo trilogy which is a good book if long. Or Gaston leroux the mystery of the yellow room. Edward cline sparrow hawk series of books is great to read to.Another book that is a work of vignettes is titled mirrors by Mahfouz. Also by leroux perfume of the lady in black. Khan Al-Khalili is also good. [This message has been edited by Pat f (edited 11-15-2011).] [This message has been edited by Pat f (edited 01-29-2012).] IP: Logged |

Tithe by Holly Black. Anybody remember the Spiderwick Chronicles? Same author, faeries, a lot darker. The book is amazing. But ,warning, the book is pretty mature. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I loved the Spiderwick Chronicles! However, I couldn't believe that the fourth book was completely ignored in the movie... But Holly Black, writing a mature book? THIS I have to see. I've been reading the Law of the Lycans series by Nicky Charles, since they're all free on iBooks. But a warning to all younger readers: the series is more detailed than Elphie and Fiyero's relationship in Wicked by a long shot. Oh, and read Bonded before the official first book of the series... It gives you an insight on how the Lycan government works and explains the hierarchy within a pack better than any of the other books. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I don't know right now but I will tomorrow ![]() Tithe is really good, you'll probably like it. What I love is that the author doesn't shy away from using language. Most YA authors won't cuss. I read this one YA series where the two main characters where teens and said , out loud, WTH. No one uses text talk when they're actually talking except for those weird people who say lol instead of laughing. And people barely really say omg. I've got to finish that soon. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Finished Law of the Lycans series, guys!!! I still feel like the first book was my favorite, though. The rest were SO predictable. The first one was still predictable in some ways, but there were a few surprises. So now I'm back to working on OoOz... I'm kind of stuck. I'm having a hard time getting through it, and I've had the book for, like, two months. I'm at the part where they just left Apple Press Farm. *sigh* I'm sure I'll finish it eventually, it's just going WAY slower than usual. Okay, and now one book later (that wasn't OoOz, lol) I've officially cried over the death of a fictitious character. You all HAVE to read Across Eternity. As far as I know, it's still free on iBooks, but it might not be. It's one of the few romance novels that exists that DOESN'T have about 58,000 sexual details. Kind of refreshing, actually. I just read Aeschylus's Oresteia. It was for my mythology class, but good enough that I'd probably have read it on my own. I also read (on my own) a related short story by Orson Scott Card called Eumenides in the Fourth Floor Lavatory, an excellent modern adaptation thereof. I LOVE redone myths and fairy tales; Wicked is just the tip of the iceberg for me. IP: Logged |

A friend of mine keeps telling me to read The Hunger Games. I guess I should. I wouldn't wanna be one of those "I'll watch the movie" types. IP: Logged |

Orson Scott Card!?! He is AMAZING!!! You must read his book Ender's Game. I haven't read the whole series, not because I didn't like the first one, but because I liked the resolution of the first one and didn't want to read any more of the series. But there are actually 12 or 13 books in that series. It's sci-fi and I LOVE it. ![]() ------------------ IP: Logged |

The Red Pyramid, have you heard of Percy Jackson? It's like that except about Egypt. It teaches you Egyptian mythology in a modern setting. All thanks for me reading this go to you Witchboy, your inclusion of Egypt in our rp got me interested in their mythology. ------------------ Here are a few questions to ask yourself. IP: Logged |

quote: thats great lol, i just wish ppl would stop acting like Egyptians were fair skinned or brown skinned, when they were dark. the depictions on their walls are dark and even the drawings on the sarcophagi. i watched a special on the history channel showing ppl throwing bleach on the walls. i don't know where that type of hate comes from. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I think it was like a mix between dark and a kind of caramel color. We were watching a video about their culture in social studies. A woman in the video said they were one of the most beautiful people in history which is kind of when I got interested in them but never pursued it. ------------------ Here are a few questions to ask yourself. I have been reading a lot recently. I bought a Kindle before I came out here and it's amazing - it helps that we have about 1000 books available to put on it at work! I have mostly been reading trash though. I need to start on my folder called "books I should read". I particularly enjoyed Tuesday With Morrie, but I think that's the only onw worth mentioning. We have a book club too, and last month we read Our Inner Ape (non fiction) which was really, really interesting. The next one is Grimm's fairy stories paired with another book about fairy stories which I've forgotten the name of now. Last night I finished The Pact by Jodi Picoult and decided that is very definitely the last ever Jodi Picoult book I will read. I couldn't decide whether I had read it before or it was just so similar to all of her other books I could tell what would happen. I started an Italo Calvino book but wasn't into it so left it for now and went with The Bell Jar. I only read the introduction before I fell asleep! ------------------ IP: Logged |

quote: *GASP* You've read The Graveyard Book? I love that book!!! It's the only book of his that I've read, but that book is pretty darn amazing. I just finished Katherine's Prophecy. It was... Okay. The only major flaw was that it was supposedly a horror novel, but 1) It ended too happily for what I consider to be a legit horror novel. 2) It transformed into a romance novel near the end. (I like romance novels, but romance novels cannot mix with horror novels, or there will be trouble. When I read a horror novel, I want a bloody, gruesome mess. I can read romance novels some other time. Whatever, call me Roman.) However, aside from that, it was pretty good, with the exception of a few things that were just too unrealistic. (Proposing, like, the day he met her? Ummm... No.) And the whole family tree thing was just a big confusing mess. If you read the book, you'll know what I mean. Honestly, looking back on this, I don't know why I thought it was a good book overall, but I suppose something was good about it. *shrugs* ------------------ IP: Logged |
