Does anyone have any info on the film version?

PLEASE tell me they're not considering Renee Zelwiger - lol.

Assuming Idina & Kristen are not eligible (Hollywood often requires bigger names)... who's your 'dream cast'? Mine:

ELPHABA - Charlize Theron, Minnie Driver
GLINDA - Megan Mullaly (Karen 'Will & Grace')
WIZARD - Joel Grey, Anthony Hopkins
MORRIBLE - Bette Midler
FIYERO - Hugh Jackman, Rob Thomas
NESSA - Natalie Portman
BOQ - Leonardo DiCapprio

Only heard speculation - not even sure which studio may have the rights (if any at this point). This post is 1) a request for info and 2) a prod for some imaginative speculation re: casting.

hollywood doesnt always need big names. take a look at the film version of rent thats out in november. there are 5 original cast members in the film, including idina menzel, taye diggs, anthony rapp, adam pascal and wilson jermaine heredia. also kristin chenoweth is making a name for herself in tv. i know that she's recently been in the west wing in the states.

That's great, but Bebe Neuwirth made a name for herself as Lilith on 'Cheers' - but she wasn't in 'Chicago.' Patty Lupone was on TV, but not in 'Evita.'

I agree they sometimes go for talent over name, but not usually. Yes - 'Rent' will be a shining exception.

I'm trying to get people to think hypothetically here...

I like this hipotetical thing... Unlimmited, i only agree with Natalie Portman as Nessa. I think Nicole Kidman should play Glinda (Eventhoug she is too old for the part i think) so my second choice would be Resse Witherspon (don't know how to spel her name but you know who im talking about). Also that one girl form The Notebook. Hillary Swank should play Elphaba (I don't think she sings thoug). The guy who played the Phantom in the Phantom of the Opera (Film version) would be a good Fiyero as well as Ewan McGregor and Jude Law. Joel Gray would have no problems geting the part of the Wizard. Maggie Smith would be a good Horrible Morrible. And Boq could be played by that one guy from the OC (ive never seen the series but i think he is the main one, the blond one).

By the way, Universal Studios has the rights of the show. I haven't heard plans on doing the film version.

I was thinking in terms of actresses who might be able to sing.

I LOVED Nicole in 'Moulin Rouge' - but she is very much an alto. Megan Mullaly has the range and also that twit-wit Galinda posseses.

Maggie Smith?!?! LOVE IT! I also think Hillary Swank would make a good Nessa (if she doesn't have the pipes for Elfie).

Don't get me wrong - I would LOVE to see Idina & Kristen do the film. I saw them in the SF workshops and once on B'way. The 2nd time I saw it on B'way was w/ Idina & Jennifer. Each time, Idina was more and more nuianced!
It was also coll to see 3 Wizards: Robert Morse in SF, and Joel Grey & George Hearn on B'way.

ok, my dream cast is of course the whole original cast, but if i had to pick others:

ELPHABA: Celine Dion
GLINDA: Reese Witherspoon, Renee Zellweger
NESSA: Natalie Portman
FIYERO: Hugh Jackman
BOQ: Adam Brody (OC)
MORRIBLE: Maggie Smith
WIZARD: Joel Grey, Dustin Hoffman?

But Megan Mullaly is to old for the part and a little bit over weight (don`t get me wrong, i love her). And i piked Hillary Swank for Elphie because i think she has the right anatomy for the character.

I KNOW!!! Mariah Carey would be a great Elphaba LOL !!!!

if reese witherspoon had the voice then i think she'd make quite a good glinda, not only is she absolutely gorgeous but she has that popular look about her. if only she were a soprano. natalie portman would make a nice nessa i think. although, like i said in my last post, i'd like to see trained musical theatre performers in the film. by the way, the guy who played phantom is a scot named gerard butler. and i agree, megan mullally is great but she's is too old and not right for the part, they are supposed to be at school for the first act.

I think that Ewan McGregor would be the best as Fiyero, and I really can't think of anyone that could play Elphaba, except Idina or Stephanie. Hopefully after the "Rent" movie, people will notice Idina, and she'll be put in the film. Reese, if she can sing, would be the best Galinda. And Maggie Smith would be a great Morrible. Tobey Maguire would be a cute Boq. I don't know much about who could play Nessa and the Wizard. I love Natalie Portman, but I don't see her as Nessa.

Carole Shelley is a movie person, so they could put her back in Morrible's shoes, and Minnie Driver would be a great Nessa, now that I think of it. George Hearn was my favorite Wizard, and he has movie credits to him, I believe. I would love him in the movie if it were to be made.

People might be skeptical about this, but if Idina couldn't do it, how about Shoshana? I mean I've seen her live and I was amazed and some people might know her from the Godspell revival and Hairspray. Just a thought b/c she is good enough to play the part.

Good enough to play the part isn't the top concern to Hollywood - it's the name and star-power.

It would be fabulous if Rent did well enough for Idina to play Elphie.

But no matter who's in it - I'm sure I'll go see it.

Tobey Maguire as Boq - good one! & why did I not think of my heart-throb Ewin as Fiyero?!?! Thanks for the ideas, guys - keep 'em comin'!

Jennifer Garner (from Alias), Minnie Driver, Andie MacDowell, Angelica Houston, Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Sky High).... for Elphaba if a white actress is chosen. Angela Bassett, Whitney Houston, or Brandy "Moesha" Norwood if a black actress is chosen.

Maggie Smith (Clash of the Titans/Sister Act/Harry Potter) would be totally perfect for Morrible!! I hear Rue Maclanahan is currently playing the part according tothe official website. SWEET!!!

I definitely don't want to see Taye as Fiyero - I know everyone loves him and all, but I heard him sing Dancing Through Life and he totally and completely butchered it. I was so turned off. Norbert Leo Butz, from the original cast would be my number one pick, but in honesty I think the roll should be played by a dark skinned man as the book requires. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any black or latino actors who would have the voice for the part, though I'm sure the cast of LION KING could produce someone - but his singing voice HAS GOT to be good enough to rip your heart out like Norbert's did.

Nichol Kidman, Carol Kaine, Blythe Danner (have you heard her sing in "1776"? Beautiful!), Cyndi Lauper, or Megan Mullaly (who does sing and has an album out) is my suggestion for Glinda.

John Hurt or Patrick Stewart as the Wizard!!!!!!!!

Natalie Portman sounds good for Nessa, but can she sing?

Angela Bassett as Elphie? YES!!!!
I don't think I'd want to see Whitney (try to) act the role (remember 'Bodyguard'? "And IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIiiiiiiiiiiiiiIIIII want my $ back!" If they gave the role to Brandy I don't think I could bear it.

Fiyero - I completely agree re: Taye's lack of vocal ability. With movie magic - an actor of any race could play Fiyero; if they wanted him darker skined, they could do it w/make up. I read somewhere they tried the diamonds in the musical, but they didn't 'read' past the 1st few rows.

I've also thought about Jenifer Garner for Elphaba... I have to stick with Nicole and Witherspoon for Glinda, Smith for Morrible, and Ewan for Fiyero. I also think Toby woul be the perfect Boq.

Its funny most of us agree Portman would be good for Nessa.

First off, about the movie. Even if Universal has the rights, I'm sure there won't be a movie in the works for another couple of years. A movie would mean a drop in theater attendance. Yes, hardcore Wicked fans would still go, but tickets would not sell out as fast as they are right now. They won't start on a movie until they need to rehype Wicked, which probably won't be for a couple of years.

Second, I think if they do do the movie, they should stick with as much original cast as possible, except change Nessa. Nessa should be played by Jenna Leigh Green (touring Nessa).

I think they would try to keep the cast the same as broadway if they can. I am also wondering, is this movie the same as the musical or will it be closer to the book? That would be an important factor in casting because a lot of the characters are way different in the book and the play.

i don't mean to sound offensive whatsoever but the actors some of you are putting down are WAY out of the ballbark. may i mention that if there is a movie they probably want people who can actually sing the part. i know they can have voice overs for the songs but that's just weird becuase the singing voice never fits the actors speaking voice. kristin chenoweth did the movie version for music man and idina menzel is doing the movie version of rent there is no reason why either should turn down the role. im sure that when making a musical into a movie they try to have the obc do the movie (depending on how the actors have aged of course). plus there are few a-list actors that have the ranges of up to a high d# for galinda/glinda in no one mourns the wicked and belting out (chest voice) a top line f for elphaba. im sure there'll be a movie with the kind of attention the show is getting and it being the prequel/sequel to the wizard of oz which was also a broadway show made into a movie.

ok, i admit i didnt read through everyone's comments so my last post might have a little overdone. im really about great acting and singing when it comes to musicals. all the previous mentioned a-list actors and actresses mentioned are great for cheesy flims (not to say they arent good actors or that the writers are awful they're just acting/writing for today's audience and we tend to like cheesy movies, i do myself) but Wicked is different you've got to have a pointy noses, pointy chinned person playing elphaba that can pull off the changes she goes through and the galinda/glinda has to be able to change a lot too. fiyero has to be an itelligent bad boy and so on for the other characters. hollywoods isnt necessarily full of the best actors its full of the ones who can be great in todays types of films. except for maggie smith, she's the only one i can see playing one of the characters that has not been in the broadway production. im gonna shut up now ive been rambling on and don't even know where im going with this. all i know is (in my opinion of course) if there are any of the actors in it (besides maggy smith)if it is made into a movie i will extremely disappointed.

I think that if for some reason Idina couldn't do it, why not ask Ana Gasteyer? I saw her in the Chicago production, and while her Elphie and Idina's are quite different (at least by the sounds of the OBC soundtrack compared to what I heard at) Ana really blew me away. Plus, since she was on SNL for 6 years, she also has the name for it.

I just saw the musical, and I loved it. But, if there were to be a movie I would like it to be closer to the book. That way there could be a sequal, also I think book had a bit more appeal to the movie going market.

You know what? I just saw Bewitched today at the movies and I don't think Kristin Chenoweth will play Glinda if they decide to make a movie because she really looks old. .. its sad i know, but at the begining of the show they are suposed to be 17 or 18 at the most. And if they make the movie it will be like 10 years from now and she will really look old by then. I love her but in a close up she really looks more than 30 years old... so i don't know.

Kristin is now 35, or atleast thats what one of her fan sites says. She is way to old to play the part of Glinda now, even when she was 32 she looked too old. Idina however can pull of the 20 look quite well.

Kristin is 37-and only a year older than Jennifer Lopez (which I found quite surprising).

And I have to admit, as much as I love her, she will be too old to play Glinda by the time a film is made. So they'd better step on it-some of the casts that have been presented in this thread already are pretty scary...I'm sorry-I do not want Ewan MacGregor, Hilary Swank, or Bill Cosby in the WICKED film.

What about a movie based on the book? I think also that a black actor should play Fiyero (Taye Diggs anyone??) because in the book he is black and I think that diversity in movies never hurts. Plus, Taye is pretty famous and already played Fiyero in the show once.
