anyhoo:
after a year and after watching Ugly Betty 'Something Wicked This Way Comes', I remembered these boards and thought more about people who I think might fit the film cast:

Elphie: ME! Only not really. Ellen Page. She's very talented and could pull off that outcast role very well.
Or Anne Hathaway. But she'll probably be in her 30's by the time they begin filming. Or Natalie Portman or Anna Paquin

Glinda: Emmy Rossum. Because she's the only soprano in the business that I'm aware of that has a great soprano voice.

Fiyero: Brendon Urie. Great voice.

Boq: Emile Hirsch. Shia Lebouf. Patrick Stump. Because I don't see either of them as the leading man. I mean, they Shia has been a leading man, but not in they way I think is needed to play Fiyero.

Nessa: Vanessa Anne Hudgens. She will never suit either Elphie or Glinda. She hasn't got the range for Glinda or the potential to pull off a decent Elphie. Nessa would suit her because it's a small role and she has this superficial air about her that I feel would suit her to play Nessa.

Madame Morrible: Helen Mirren, or Helena Bonham Carter or Minnie Driver

The Wizard: Anthony Hopkins or Johnny Depp or Gerard Butler

as a nod to the musical
Elphie's dad: Norbert Leo Butz
Elphie's mom: Idina Menzel
Glinda's mom: Kristen Chenoweth

What would be the purpose of having Kristin play Glinda's mom? Glinda'm mom is only refenced to during a song.

Well, as a nod to the musical. They can have her appear at the beginning as a small role when Glinda, Elphaba and the rest of the students first come to the University.

I like that idea. It's sort of like in the movie of Hairspray, John Waters had a cameo as the flasher in "Good Morning Baltimore", and Ricky Lake had a cameo somewhere towards the end (I can't quite remember where).

I can't picture her blonde. Or as Glinda at all. Maybe my brain thinks she's too tall, I don't know. (Though if she was Glinda, and Gerard Butler was the Wizard, I would laugh so, so hard.)

No offence, but if some of you were casting directors then this film would turn out hilarious. Lol. I think this would be quite a good cast for the movie.

Elphaba: Anne Hathaway
Glinda : Reese Witherspoon
Fiyero : James Marsden
The Wizard: Michael Caine
Madame Morrible: Maggie Smith
Nessa-Rose: Natalie Portman
Boq: Jason Earles ( Maybe )

I actually do not like the idea of them using famous actors and actresses in Wicked, but if it came down to that I actually thought of Anne Hathaway as Elphaba wouldn't be so bad at all. Only thing is if they make it a musical, I don't know if she'd be able to sing well enough.

Why can't they just use the origional broadway actors if and when the musical is turned into a movie, using other actors just ruins it for me.

That's just my opinion.

Just like what they did for REnt, they used most of the origional actors from the musical for the movie.

They are too old to play college-age students. This takes place at the start of their freshman year at Shiz and Elphaba leaves to fight against the Wizard and Madame Morrible while she was still attending Shiz.

Kristen is 39, Idina is 37. Far too old to portray a student in their late teens/early 20s. Which is why I don't think RENT became a very huge success because the cast memebers looked noticable older than the characters they were supposed to portray.

People love Idina and Kristin so much that they'll find a way to include them. Even if it's just as extras in the Emerald City so the fangirls in the theaters can then jump up and down for a minute.

Everyone who has been in the show will probably be considered before casting is opened for other people.

I just read on IMDB.com that they are in fact working on the script for the movie Wicked, to be based more off the musical. It seems like this is the decade for musicals. It's slated to be released sometime 2010.

I'm pretty sure that with movie magic, they will keep Idina and Kristen as the main characters, due to popular (no pun intended) demand, but if they don't:

Elphaba: I would love to see Anne Hathaway, Amy Lee (the lead singer of Evanescence) or Nicole Kidman in the role (although we'd have some problems with rumors of Nicole being a hollywood closeted Witch <Practical Magic, Bewitched, The Golden Compass 1-3> )

Galinda (a.k.a. Glinda): I could only see Kristen in this role. I wouldn't wish for anyone else. She's way to bubbly in everything she does (the neighbor in Bewitched).

Please Please Please Gregory. . .you will have a say in the movie and you must insist on good casting! No matter who is cast, I don't thik it will ever be as good or amazing as the broadway show! With the expectations that the fans are going to have, it has to be amazing. The best cast should be the original cast from the stage show. They pulled it off for RENT minus a few, Idina is a must!!!

Please use your rights as the author of the book to demand the original cast!!!

No. It will work just fine. Movies of musicals are huge hits. Look at the classics!

Or if classics don't suit you, look at RENT.

Well I, for one, hope nobody from the broadway music reprises their roles. The film version of this great book should be dark and more serious, and devoid of playful musical numbers. While I thought the musical was colorful and fun, it hardly scraped the surface in its misrepresentation of Maguire's great literary achievement. No, some truely talented ACTORS, who won't be required to force singing tones, should be cast. If i were Maguire, I would shop a (hopefully more serious) movie script to the likes of Guillermo Del Torro or Peter Jackson - both of these men are truely adept at translating epic fantasy to the big screen. I would also expect this to be a franchise of films, instead of just one, as Son of a Witch and I am sure Lion Among Men would lend themselves just as well to film as Wicked.

You see: the movie WILL be of the musical. Thats already definite. It has much more money-making potential. The book is far too dark and introspective for a movie anyway.

I agree entirely if Idina Adam and the others could come out to do the Rent movie 20 years after the broadway show I think it would be entirely dissappointing if the original cast didn't come back for the Wicked Movie

i'm gonna have to go with OBC all the way! there hasn't been a better pair since CHENZEL, and i think they should bring them back for the movie.
as for whether or not idina and kristen could pull off the college-girl look, think of this: jennifer garner (35) portrayed Sydney Bristow, and at one point, played her as a ninteen-year-old.
if not OBC, then MY dream cast of Wicked has: (note: idina menzel will always be in my dream cast.)
idina menzel- elphaba
but if idina could not be in it...
jennifer garner- elphaba
(even though she's young)
hayden panettiere/ashley tisdale- glinda
victor garber- the wizard
norbert leo butz- fiyero
natalie portman/emmy rossum- nessarose

and also, keep in mind that it's a lot harder to hide age on the stage, than it is to hide it in the movies. it's a little something i like to call, "MOVIE MAGIC!"
and yes, i am well aware of the age difference between jen garner and hayden/ashley. and the diff between norbert and hayden/ashley.

I suppose it is a possibility. But there are many talented actors out there who'd do a great job.

I think Caissie Levy and Willemijn Verkaik are both amazing.

And I have an addition to my ideal film cast. Natalie Portman for Nessa.

I will be VERY disapointed if they don't choose the OBC.... so much in fact that I probably won't bother seeing it. Kristin still looks 25 and Idina will have green makeup on so she'll look young too. And if not, bring in the special effects!

Hmmmm. I understand your point, but I'm torn between my love of the original cast and my love of a special cast.

I do think some big names are needed. Probably for the Wizard and Morrible.

But I'd love to see someone who's got consistency. Idina is great on her good nights, but she has too many bad nights. For consistency, I say Willemijn Verkaik and Caissie Levy.

We also need to take acting into account. And Caissie Levy is the best Elphie for acting. She'd pass for a young Margaret Hamilton with a nice voice.

All of the fulltime Elphaba's so far in LA are among the best. Eden, Caissie, and Teal. You definitely have a deep-set bias towards Caissie I've noticed.

Every third thing seems to be how great Caissie is in comparison to everyone else and how none of them will ever match her all-powerful greatness. She was also the only Elphaba who left because of voice problems. She wasn't properly trained in belting.

Sorry if I'm annoying you.

Her doctor told her she'd suffer permanent damage to her voice if she didn't stop. Its not her fault. Her voice just couldn't take the constant stress.

I'm sorry if I am bothering you!

Its natural to love your first Elphie. And I have been struck by the acting Caissie had. She was definitely not the greatest singer to ever do the role. But her acting was special. I have never seen anyone do as good a job acting. She sounded exactly like Margaret Hamilton. I was struck when while freeing the monkeys she cackled and said "Fly my pretties!" The audience loved it. She acted in a way I have never seen before or since. And believe me I've looked. I've talked. I've asked. Again and again I hear the same story: unequaled acting.

She had standing ovations the whole night. When I returned, she was gone and Teal Wicks was there. Teal was good, but just not as good. I like and respect her, but Caissie is still my first and my favorite.

So once again, I'm very sorry if I'm annoying you. If I get out of hand just slap me and tell me to shut up. That usually works pretty well.

And Eden was my first. Eden and Teal are the one's I've seen, and from my parents I know Julie (Reiber) was really good. Eden and Teal are very similar, especially in voice, so the grounds I had for comparison between them weren't much. Between Caissie and Eden and Teal and Caissie there seems to be more of a difference.

Yes, Teal and Eden are more similar than Caissie is to either. She has a pretty nasal singing voice. But not at all bad. Its always hard to compare a live performance you've seen with video on youtube. It just doesn't do justice.

And I wish I had been around to see Eden. But that was before I became a Wicked fan. [sigh]

I've been a fan since I heard about the show from a girl I carpooled with for rhythmic gymnastics. And my mom promised me tickets for about a year and my aunt got me the book. So I knew a lot about the basic overall story, but I didn't want to ruin it for myself.

I guess I was luckier. I knew absolutely nothing. My history teacher had just taken some of my classmates on a trip to "The Color Purple" and decided to have a trip to see Wicked. My friends bullied me into going. I finally gave in and forked over the money. I came in with no expectations. Naturally I was blown away!

Haha, before I saw it I knew NOMTW and WITF?. But only little parts of it. And that's thanks to the girl who always played the CD in the car. But she never told me anything about the actual show.

So seeing the show finalized my absolute and total infatuation with it.

Yes...

I heard "Popular" at a talent show. That was my first exposure. I thought the lyrics were good and then two weeks later I forgot about it.

Then I became obsessed and the memory resurfaced.

The only choice for Elpie is Idina, and Glinda must be Kristin. That's the only logical plan. It will most likely be finished in the next 5 years, because one of the producers has just gotten a 5 year contract. So hopefully we'll see it soon. ^^
But Gerard Butler could be an awesome Fiyero.
