SoulOverflowing I absolutely adore your signature picture. I just saw that movie and it is amazing. I don't know where but somehow Jim Sturgess should be put in Wicked.

I haven't read the full board, and I'm a new user, but I get that this is about the "wicked" movie?

Firstly, is this mainly about the novel or the musical? Because I think the musical would be much better as a film because the novel is a bit too long. And if you started cutting bits you basically get left with the musical anyway!

And about the cast, I think that the original cast would be a good Idead, but for the young Elphaba, Glina, Bog etc, they should have different and most certainly younger actors to play them. No offence, But I think Reece Witherspoon (Is that how you speel it?) Would make a great young glinda (if she can sing) She so.... BLONDE!!!

Thanks for the first post, it was fun
lol

Just another little thing, I don't see why everyone wants Leonardo DiCaprio doesn't really seem like a good Boq to me. He doesn't seem very nerdy/ sweet and I don't think he's the kind of guy to become made of tin!

I would love it if they made Wicked into a movie! I woudn't want Hollywood stars in it though. That would ruin it for me.

I would want the original cast in it. Especially Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenoweth, and Norbert Leo Butz!

First of all, we know that there isn't going to be a Wicked movie anytime soon. If you search google there is an interview with Stephen Schwartz saying that he hasn't even considered a Wicked movie just yet. Also, there definitely could be one because Universal Studios already holds the rights to it. We're all just discussing who we would like to see in it.

I completely agree with Syke_01. I think age doesn't really matter anymore just as long as the voices are still just as good. They have make-up, botoxs, (dont know how to spell) and not to mention computer graphics if they have to. The only time we'd have to worry for the original cast would be if they were like 70. Unless of course they aged like Cher.

It would be awesome to have a movie about Wicked, as long as its closer to the book then the play. Having read the book, the play as great as it is, doesn't truly bring to life the Witches of Oz like the book.

Wow, well Im new here too. And I'm a film student at the moment. I'd love to direct the musical but even though I admit it would be so cool to have all those famous people in you have to consider a few things:

- Funding, the money to pay those actors and the more high profiled they are the more money they cost to hire or use.

- And if it was me, I'd want to stay as truthful to the musical (and even the novel) as possible. Cos wen u saw that musical for the first time, you didn't expect anyone well known in them and you still enjoyed the show. So aslong as the actors do justice to the characters and make you enjoy the film it shouldn't really matter.

Here's hoping no one snaps the chance before I do

But nice suggestions anyway

I heard somewhere that Universal or somebody might release not really a movie version of Wicked but like they'd release basically a recording of the entire play on DVD (but obviously w/o the audience). I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about that.

How about a compromise? If they do make the movie, they should just do digital animation. Like in Shrek. Not the Incredibles! That way they won't totally butcher Elphaba flying on her broom and stuff like that. They should do the animation like in Beowulf.( If you've seen the previews for it, it looks like actual people at first glance.)

It would probably take longer than a normal movie, but it might be better to have voice actors than normal actors (I don't think that made any sense at all)I know everyone wants to see how they would make the flying monkeys, munchkins, Animals, etc... but instead of them being clearly digital compared to the rest of the movie, which, for me personally is pretty easy to see, if they do live action.

I found this website where it quotes what Idina says about Wicked becoming a movie and her response of another person playing "her role"......

Much like they did with Rent, Menzel says that she has definitely heard talk of turning Wicked into a film, which she would love to be a part of. “I think it’s doing too well, financially, right now, on the stage, so they don’t need to turn it into a film yet. They usually like to do the movie when they need a little bit more attention in New York, and then it boosts the sales again, like with Rent.”

Although she is realistic about the fact that, by the time they decide to do the film version of Wicked, she could end up being too old to even be considered, Menzel admits that she would be upset if she had to watch someone else play the role that she originated.

“That’s how I felt with Rent. They had cast other people in the film version, and then the projects would fall apart. I feel like whatever is meant to be with those things will be. You can’t push them. I let go of the idea that I’d get to play Maureen in the Rent movie, and then it came back around. But, that happens. If I don’t look right, I don’t look right. But, you’re not going to get someone who can sing it like that. I don’t care how cool the computers in the studio are now. You can get people to sound okay, but they’re going to have lower keys, and they’ll have to change the whole thing. I sound so conceited, don’t I? I guess you could find some young girl who can scream her face off, but I’d be so upset.”

cheers for that info, I think she'd be brilliant to play her again but in the film. Cos in effect its her role, and she has a set of lungs on her...but id also consider Kerry Ellis (London's Elphaba) for it too cos she is amazing and still only 28 or 29.

Like i said before, aslong as they bring ustice to the role and can sing the songs the best they can be sang, then the movie will be good.

Yes, he shouldn't be! I like Zac, but he just doesn't fit. And FYI to those who think age isn't important in Hollywood...wake up! Of course it is. Ur not, no matter how much you want to have 45-year old Kristin play 18. It just can't happen. What about emmy rossum for Nessa?

I have often thought of Reese Witherspoon as Glinda. However, I heard that she herself admitted that in "Walk The Line," she was unsure if she could sing. Galinda's vocal score requires someone with a major professional voice. However, I sure love Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon would be perfect for the role if they did the novel version. That way she wouldn't have to sing but if it's a musical then they NEED to get professionals that can sing perfectly.

I think Jensen Ackles is really cute but again, it depends on which version they do. If he could sing then I think he would be a great Fiyero.

I strongly feel that if they are going to make Wicked into a movie they should base it on the book and not the musical. The musical has already been done. Let the intricate character development and story lines of the book get some time in the limelight.

You make a very good point, but i think that the book is too dark and political to be a movie. Its very complex and VERY long and not appealling to some audiences. The musical is very good for everyone, so thats why i think it would be a good idea to make the movie from the musical.

I have not read all 30-odd pages of this topic yet, so please do not berate me for covering things that have already been beaten to death with a broomstick.

Universal has the rights, as they were adapting it to a movie before it was made into a musical instead. Since they shelled out the millions of dollars to produce it, I really don't know why they haven't started work on making it into a movie yet, although I believe the success of HAIRSPRAY, ENCHANTED, and to a lesser extend ACROSS THE UNIVERSE as well as the possible success of SWEENEY TODD, it is clear that musicals are coming back and that it is time.

Kristin has made a huge name for herself, starring in BEWITCHED, RV, DECK THE HALLS, THE WEST WING, KRISTIN (flop...), and the new hit television series PUSHING DAISIES. As such, they would most likely cast her in a heartbeat. However, if not done within the next few years she will be too old, although that didn't stop them with RENT.

As for Idina, her name is smaller, so it may be more of a push. However, the past two weeks her two movies ENCHANTED and BEOWULF have been the number 1 and two films, respectively. That's saying something. She also has the Tony for the role, soo...

Obviously, Joel Grey is a big name and would be offered the part, most likely.

For Morrible, I could see them getting that lady from Taxi whose name I don't remember. She did it on Broadway for awhile, and she is a recognizable voice/face/name.

Fiyero is tougher. I could see them doing something stupid/weird and getting Zac Efron or something. Ew. James Marsden would rock that role, and he has the clout both vocally and name-wise.

Boq and Nessa are drawing blanks for me, actually. I could see Amy Adams as Nessa (She's Giselle in ENCHANTED), but I dunno if she'd take a supporting role after her recent success. Boq...I just can't think of anyone at all for that, personally.

Either way, this needs to be made into a movie. It'd make Universal hundreds of millions of dollars, I mean seriously. If not for the fans or whatever, you'd think they'd do it for the freaking money.

Ooh, sorry for double post.

No one here has mentioned voice dubbing. I hate it, but it happens. They do it. Like Depp in Cry Baby or Natalie Wood in West Side or Hepburn in My Fair Lady.

I don't think they'd get Chenoweth or Menzel to agree to just dub singing voices for Reese or whoever. And also, at least Kristin has a very distinctive voice so it would be hard to get her to dub.

i agree whole heartedly, 100%!

They took the novel, and made that into a Musical,
if they make a film, they need to branch away from the current Wicked Musical franchise and have the film come from the heart of the novel - a closer adaptation.

It may be much longer, darker, and COMPLETELY different story threads, however, it would serve as a masterpiece!

The musical is literally my most favourite thing in the world! it opens here in Melbourne next July, and i already went and got an ushering job for the company that owns the theatre. AND i almost wet myself when the first official piece of public advertising went around on some of our city trams, starting a month ago!

However as much as i love the musical, its a musical for a reason, and would not fair as a musical adaptation film, there are too many things that rely on the magnitude of show, with power belting, wall shuddering music, dazzling visuals, and one liner - stage- humour. Without all that, you're left with a very dull, poor story with some great songs!

The novel is more closely based on the wizard of oz, and isnt a genre ridden, titillating, predictible story... the musical gives us what we want, to satisfy our emotional hunger... the story in the novel makes me cringe, and as touching as the show was, the novel literally got up, and spoke to my heart.

basically, by the end of the film, Elphaba needs to be a schizophrenic psycho with no sense of remorse or feelings, not singing about how Glinda changed her life.

all in all, if you want to see the musical so bad, GO SEE IT! dont wait for it to come to you as a movie... it will be a MAJOR let down!!!

WICKED NOVEL FOR WICKED MOVIE!

xo

ELPHABA - Charlize Theron, Minnie Driver
GLINDA - Megan Mullaly (Karen 'Will & Grace')
WIZARD - Joel Grey, Anthony Hopkins
MORRIBLE - Bette Midler
FIYERO - Hugh Jackman, Rob Thomas
NESSA - Natalie Portman
BOQ - Leonardo DiCapprio

My ideal cast would be the original cast, but it's not likely they will do that if they make a movie so I think they should pick people that are actually talented with acting....
ELPHABA: Cate Blanchett
GLINDA: Nicole Kidman/Minnie Driver
WIZARD: Ian McKellan
MORRIBLE: Anjelica Huston/Carol Kane/Judy Dench
FIYERO: Jonathan Rhys Meyers/Hugh Dancy/Matthew Bomer
NESSA: Anne Hathaway
