my picks for the cast

Elphaba - Minnie Driver or Megan Mullally (I know she's older but she's amazing)
G(a)linda - Reese Witherspoon
Wizard - Patrick Stewart
Morrible - Glenn Close
Fiyero - Roger Bart (stepford wives)
Nessa - Jorja Fox (Sara from CSI)
Boq - Sean Hayes

I read through most of this. I personally would rather not see a movie version of Wicked done, just because I feel that no matter how they would do it there would be things I didn't like about it.

Realistically speaking, they will probably make a movie out of it. I would really want as much of the original cast as possible. If they decided to do it with bigger names, I guess these would be my choices:

Elphaba: Catherine Zeta-Jones
Glinda: Reese Witherspoon - I liked that idea, but I'm still not sure because I don't feel she can handle the singing
Fiyero: I guess Taye Diggs
Nessa: Jenna Leigh Green
Boq: I have to say I am really not sure
Morrible: Bette Middler
Wizard: Bill Cosby - I really liked that idea

But I would really want to see it done witht he OBC.

i personally think that it would be great if the original broadway cast did the movie(hopefully there is one! ) like Idena and Krisin? they are the only ones that could pull it off singing it the way that they do.

MY Cast would be OBC, but my backup would be:

ELPHABA: Nikki Blonsky [if she slimmed down]

GLINDA: Brittany Snow [HAHA. too much hairspray, but to me they do seem fit for the part. PLUS they are young.]

FIYERO: I'd say if it were a kids/teen aimed movie Zac Efron, but for a more mature audience, I am not too sure.

NESSAROSE: Michelle Federer {sp?}

WIZARD: Richard Gere

And why exactly wouldn't Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth be in the question?

My dream cast would be the original Broadway cast.

Afterall, in RENT the movie, it was all the original broadway cast members with the exception of Rosario Dawson (Mimi) and Tracie Thorns (Joanne)

Hollywood doesn't need bigger names ...
And I don't think anyone can play Elphaba like Idina Menzel (who WAS in RENT as well ... )

Same with Kristin and Glinda.

As for the others ... yeah, I guess bigger names. But the characters were pretty much MADE by those two. All the other casts copied their Ideas ...

I love Idina and Kristen and I think they are the best at playing Elphaba and Glinda, but I think it depends on when they decide to do a movie if they should play the roles or not. Idina is 38 and Kristen is 39, so by the time they think about coming up with a movie and film it, it could take about 10 years. That would make them almost 50 years old! (Hard to believe, but true.) They should get some new people to play the roles. They should get people that can really sing and give justice to the roles rather than getting some big names stars and having them do just an ok job.

Although, if they would decide to film a movie of the performance, then they should definately have the OBC come back.

Since I really dont want to read through 38 pages of posts, can someone just tell me really quick where we are on a movie? Have there been any plans, proposals, cast lists, or anything about a movie for Wicked?

Personally, I think its likly because look at all the plays have become movies: PotO, Hairspray, RENT, and Chicago. And movies out of books are common too (though have usually had bad results): Golden Compass, Harry Potter, and LotR, to say the least. A play/book as popular as Wicked seems to be a likly candidate to be made into a movie.

So, anything new? Any tentative plans in the works at the very least?

Thanks for sharing info!

If there is a movie, it needs to have the people who worked on Broadway or are helping with the tours today. Like with RENT, it was (nearly) the entire Broadway cast. Didnt that rock?

None of these Hollywood stars, please. OBC all the way!

I like the idea of Idina Menzel, Glen Close, and Joel Grey (except their getting kind of old.) I'm not sure about the rest though. It would look really weird for Idina to be in love with Zac Efron. I don't know about Britney Snow and Vanessa Hudgens. I like Vanessa but sometimes she sounds like she's singing through her nose and would she be able to act kind of evil like Nessarose? Also, can Britney Snow sing that high? I haven't seen the movie Hairspray yet.

PEOPLE!!!!!! They wanted to do a movie and worked for like three years and only got to the second script. They couldn't get it to work. So they did a musical instead. I'm sorry but I don't think Wicked should ever be a movie. Your loss if you don't want to pay to get a ticket. Nothing, I mean nothing, compares with seeing something live. The cheapest tickets are thirty something dollars and theres a lottery at the theatre in LA for these front row seats and it costs $20. I know someone who won so its possible.

It took 20 years for a workable movie script to be developed for "Chicago."

Just because they couldn't come up with a movie script for Wicked a few years ago, does not mean that there won't be a movie made at some point in time.

Movie musicals are tricky propositions. "Chicago" did very well, "The Producers" tanked & "Rent" didn't do much better, although I think "Rent" actually made its production costs, but very little profit.

The OBC will be too old by the time a movie version of "Wicked" is made, that is only common sense. IF a movie is made, it will be made with big name stars, even if they aren't the best singers. As the current crop of teenybopper pop stars show, studio engineers can do wonders. What matters is that the singer is cute, not the quality of their voice.

You always hear people say its whats on the inside that counts. But then theres Hollywood and the Medi: where the looks of someone matter more than whats inside them. I know we want to see people who catch our eye in the movies, but they don't have to go party, do drugs, get drunk and drive, and change their hair color like it goes out of style every two weeks.

I'm thinking now that they should make a movie, but it should be different from the musical and based more on the book. I prefer to state facts than think about something. I beat down all the movie ideas and now I agree with them. Weird, huh? Oh well.

I would have to say that Wicked the movie would have to be based off the book! It'd be easier and they wouldn't ruin the musical.

Once again I say it.

THE MOVIE (if they ever make one) HAS TO BE BASED ON THE BOOK!

If they do make the musical into a movie, there would be no point in seeing it. Its playing in 7 (soon to be 8) places around the world, with about 130 people working to make each show work. And who in the world is going to need people who know how to make others fly (unless their Cirque du Soleil) or lighting technicians, set designer, costume designer...etc...

They've won awards for the MUSICAL NOT A MOVIE!

Well then you don't have to see it! Let it be "our loss". i think it's a great idea! RENT was absolutely AMAZING on screen! Now Sweeney Todd will be out on Christmas! Hairspray just came out! Why the heck not? I say go for it! for those that want to see it, can. For those that dont, nobody's twisting your arm to go (even though you'll end up going anyway at your own free will). Right? However. i think they should keep a lot of the original cast if they do. i think it'd be bad news to put a bunch of big shot hollywood SAG actors in it.

My Picks:

Elphie: Idina Menzel
Glinda: Kristin
Fiyero: Tay Diggs, Hugh Jackman (Both Broadway Actors but Pretty big in the SAG, i know)
Nessa: Michelle Federer
Boq: Either Christopher Fitzgerald or Anthony Rapp
Dr Dillamond: William Youmans
Madame Morrible: Carole Shelley, Doris Roberts (everybody loves raymond, Marie)
The Wiz: Joel Grey, David Hyde Peirce (going out on the limb with that one).

Tell me what yall think!

What about Christina Applegate as Galinda? ( i don't know if she can sing but...)
And enough with the Zac Efron as Fiyero...just no. He is too "OMG ITS ZEFRON!" don't get me wrong, he is a nice singer and all but yeah.

Oh and I was reading a magazine and an actor said that he was really interested in being in Wicked the Musical movie that was currently being planned.

I disagree that hollywood would only use big name stars even if they arn’t the best singers because look at what they have done recently with Rent. All Hollywood is interested in is making money. Hollywood was smart enough to know that the OBC for Rent would make the most money because it would attract all of Rent’s already fans and plus more. If the singing sucks people are not going to buy it or pay to see it. And if the fans of the musical don’t like the voices then they lose all that profit. And those fans are the most important to impress because they are what is going to bring in most of the profit as long as the singing is good.

If they hury and begin making the movie within a two or three years I don’t think Idina and Kristen’s aging will get too much in the way. Nothing a whole lot of make up couldn’t handle. LOL.

Casting actors that can't sing ruins the show for people. If someone watches the movie and sees someone that can't sing or is only ok, then they probably won't give the actual musical the time of day. That would be horrible for sales. They should definetly go for someone that can sing and do the part justice. Maybe, they should look at all the actors in all the productions of Wicked, choose the best ones, and then cast them in the movie or have an open-casting call for some new fresh faces that can actually sing. Then (to attract attention and more money) they could also cast some big hollywood stars for some roles that require little singing like Madame Morrible, the Wizard, and Dr. Dillamond.

man, i thought i'd heard it all.....
i think that's the WORSTE idea to use Hollywood Big Shots who cant sing, to play these roles. And if i hear ZEFRON one more time i just might kill something. he was good in hairspray and high school musical.... lets keep it there. Fiyero is WAY out of his league. I still say no matter what, use the original cast. REGUARDLESS OF HOW OLD THEY ARE! IT'S CALLED BOTOX AND OR MAKE-UP! For instance, Tyra banks is old, she STILL looks young and beautiful. age isn't a factor so long as thier voices haven't changed.
