Rumor & wishful thinking. There has been no casting for a movie of any kind & won't be for several years.

And i agree with some of the previous posts, any movie would have to be closer to the book than the musical. This would mean that youth is not essential to the characters as the book is based over whole lifetimes, not just the time at Shiz.

Anne for Elphaba

I think she'd need a prosthetic nose and chin to more closely resemble Elphaba in th novel.

I don't think singing ability is huge issue. If they can make Madonna sound good enough for Evita, certainly Reese can be made to sound like a soprano even if she's not. Besides, I think a movie musical doesn't have to have to same quality of singing as a stage musical. Mainstream audiences would be turned off if the singing to too operatic or "stagey".

I don't know if anyone has sure information on the movie, if anyone does, let me know!
On another note...if they aren't going to choose the broadway cast, I think they should pick:

Glinda- Reese Witherspoon
Elphaba- Emmy Rossum
Nessa Rose- Camilla Belle
Boq- Patrick Wilson
Madam Morrible- Imelda Staunton
Wizard- Simon Callow

What do you mean by operatic or "stagey"? Do you mean good?

People would be not turned off by "stagey" singing as you say. I mean, phantom of the opera is it is the highest-grossing entertainment event of all time. Obviously people werent turned off there.

And although I dont really know if Madonna is that talented of a singer because I havent seen Evita and have only listened to bits and pieces of her songs (though it is disputable if even a whole song would reveal if she could sing well or not) the fact remains that Madonna is primarily a singer and Reese is an actress.

You are my HERO for casting Emmy and Patrick. Although I think Patrick Wilson could actually pull off Fiyero.

And, there is no way Christina can be G(a)linda. Ever. Ever ever ever.

But guess what.... I finally saw the show myself tonight!! It was more than I hoped and dreamed for and I am now an even more hardcore Wicked fan than I was before!

A couple things, Universal owns all rights to Wicked. Mark Platt (former head of universal) is the producer for Wicked on Stage. Check out this Article done by playbill.com:
A Movie Version of Wicked? Not Just Yet
By Kenneth Jones
03 Jul 2006

It's a smash on Broadway. A smash on tour. A smash in a Chicago sitdown. And this fall it will take London's West End by storm. Is it too soon to talk about a film version of the musical, Wicked?

"Actually, we haven't talked about it at all," composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz told Playbill.com. "My assumption has been that because [Wicked producer] Universal is a motion picture company that eventually they are going to get around to wanting to talk about a movie, since they have the right of first refusal on it. But at this point it's still kind of early in the game for us. We're just starting to launch some of the foreign productions and it remains to be seen the extent to which this will translate outside of he United States. We're going to learn that over next couple of years."

Rabid fans of the musical, based on the Gregory Maguire novel, which tells the backstory of the witches of "The Wizard of Oz," are likely already making up their speculative lists of who should play Elphaba and Galinda (aka Glinda) in any future movie version.

The novel "Wicked" has a sequel by Maguire, "Son of a Witch." Will Schwartz take a stab at a musical sequel?

"Everybody asks me that," he said, patiently. "Of course, that's not the reason I do things. I did like the sequel. And I've actually suggested to Gregory Maguire that he make that the second part of a trilogy. He said to me, and I believed him, that that had never entered his mind, but it seemed clear to me when I read it there was a third part yet to come, which I will look forward to but don't expect to be musicalizing."

Schwartz, 58, called Wicked "sort of a nice bookend" to his career, which began in 1971 with Godspell. "I've been associated with two shows that became phenomena in my lifetime," he said. "They were my first [Godspell in 1971] and, at this point, my last [Wicked in 2003]. There's a nice, neat arc to that."

Will he never write another musical?

"You never know what you're gonna do," he said. "My big project now is that I've taken on an opera commission [Opera Santa Barbara's Séance on a Wet Afternoon in 2009]. That's certainly going to occupy the bulk of my attention for the next several years. When I come up for air from that, we'll see where we are. Listen, I wasn't looking for a stage musical to do when a friend mentioned that she was reading an interesting book and it was called "Wicked." It was the idea itself that seemed irresistible to me, and particularly appropriate for me. You never know when another idea like that is going to come along, and when the medium it's going to demand is a stage show."

When Schwartz sought the theatrical rights to the novel "Wicked," he learned Universal Pictures had them sewn up. "I was lucky because it was Universal, and it was Marc Platt who was running Universal," Schwartz said. "…He had an affinity for musical theatre and therefore was not deaf to my entreaties that what this needed to be was not a movie, but musical theatre. Eventually I was able to persuade him to go that route. It's been quite a ride."

Having the idea to turn the book into a musical, and being able to see it succeed as a phenomenon is something he is "dazzled" by, Schwartz explained. "Obviously when you touch a chord like that, it's very gratifying for a writer," he said.

i don't know who to play what part. you never really know until you hear the people chosen, sing a song from the musical. i would like to see catherine zeta-jones, nicole kidman, emmy rossum, joel grey, gerard butler, or ewan mcgregor in it just because i have heard them all sing before and they sound really good!

After seeing the show, finally, I can't fathom how a movie would capture it's brilliance. I now adamently (sp?) agree that the book must be heavily incorporated into a movie version. The wonder of the show comes from seeing it live. A movie doesn't even need to be a musical... perhaps that should stay on the stage. I know this has all been said already, but I am now converted to your way of thinking.

I think it is too soon to put out a movie yet, the magic of the stage needs to stay for now. However in a few years time it would be amazing. ihave to say Kerry Ellis who is the west end Elphaba is amazing and to me nobody plays Elphie better and she should seriously be considered if there is a movie. I am going for Ewan McGregor as Fiyero too as he has an amazing voice and am clueless for the rest of the parts

I don't know if anyone posted this yet, I couldn't make it through all 35 pages. I know someone mentioned 'the guy that played phantom' in the movie...that would be Gerard Butler (unbelievably yummy). He would work as Fieryo for me. Actually, he could just stand there and read the phone book, and I'd be happy.

I will never give up on the hope that Patrick Wilson (Raoul) could play Fiyero.
And Gerard Butler.... it doesn't even matter. They should just write him a part, no matter how small, and I'll sit there and admire and be happy.

It would be hard to see someone other than Idina and Kristin play Elphaba and Glinda. So I agree there but for the rest, as long as their good I'm happy!

Because this topic is 35 pages long, I haven't checked to see if anyone mentioned REESE WITHERSPOON as Glinda. Her voice is good, and I think w/ a little work, she'd fit the part.

Ok so I'm new. I had to say something in response to all the postings about the "dream cast." I'm a huge WICKED fan, and I have seen it numberous times (including New York on Broadway with the original cast). I left the theater in awe and have been a fanatic ever since. I'm a purist to the extent that I believe most of the parts should be filled by the original cast. If you have read the Grimmerie you will know that the parts of Glinda/Galinda and Elphaba were written and changed for/by Kristin and Idina. I believe that the only two people who could do those parts justice would be the two of them. So here is my preference when it comes to the cast for a potential movie:

Elphaba: (The one and only) Idina Menzel
Glinda: Kristin Chenoweth (who else)
The Wizard: Joel Grey...the original Wizard. He's amazing!
Madame Morrible: Carole Shelley
Fiyero: While I believe Norbert Leo Butz did a great job on Broadway, I'm not a huge fan, and I think that someone else would be much more interesting to watch. So I'm going to have to say...Hugh Jackman! I could see him as the heart-throb who could juggle both women. He's a great singer as well.
Boq: Christopher Fitzgerald...He's hilarious. Patrick Wilson is 6'1"...too tall for a Munchkin!!!
Nessarose: Michelle Federer the original Nessa. Why Natalie Portman? I'm a little lost with that suggestion.
Dr. Dillamond: Robin Williams, Steve Martin, Victor Garber???
Chistery: Could be anyone really...any ideas?

Zac Efron as Boq...its interesting. I want to see how he does in the up and coming Hairspray movie.

Taye Diggs as Fiyero!!!!!! Love him, and he has had experience with the part. He filled in for Norbert when the original cast was still there.

Some of the posts for the movie cast confuse me. The worst cast would be:

Elphaba: Anne Hathaway, JLo...ugh! Idina is the only one with the pipes for that part.
Glinda: Reese...love her but no. Hilary Duff, Jessica Simpson, Xtina...What????
Fiyero: Leo DiCaprio...shoot me now...He can't sing.

No Fall Out Boy or Panic! At the Disco guys...PLEASE!!!! Let's get some real singers.
