I think it will definately happen, simply for the fact that musical movies ARE being made left and right. Strike while the iron is hot. Chicago, The Phantom of the Opera, and Rent. Phantom and Chicago killed at the box-office and i bet Rent will do the same.

And since the movie rights are already supposedly purchased, they wont wait to start the project. There's no point waiting.

Alright, so the debate is about who would be the best in the movie. I think the Galinda from Chicago (sorry, my program is downstairs) is the best I have heard. The rumours seem to indicate Idina will be the first pick, although Ana Gasteyer was beyond amazing. I would take Ewan McGregor for Fiyero. Sorry, but as long as the man is alive and kicking, Joel Grey will be my only pick for the Wizard. I like the suggestions of Bette Middler and Dame Maggie Smith (although I am not sure she is a singer by trade). Why not try Megan Mullay for Morrible, or Carol Kane, since she was in the touring company. Each lady would bring her special turn to the teacher/press secretary. Don't turn Hugh Jackson down as an option. Check out the revival of Oklahoma! and Boy from Oz (nudge, nudge, wink, wink). He is another pretty face with a great set of pipes. If you want a multicultured cast, why not Heather Hadley for Nessa.
I know some people are worried about a movie version taking away boxoffice $$ from the stage show, but the Producers is coming out in December and no one seems to be afraid. Think of it in the terms that a movie version of a fresh musical gives those who can't get to see it, or afford to see a stage performance, can go and enjoy what the rest of us has experienced live and in person.
As for a miniseries of the book. In my dreams I would love for someone to do it. I only have 4 words, for reality's sake: The Mists of Avalon. <shutter>
I hope for movie musical sake, RENT does well. Chicago and Mulin Rouge have begun to repair the great disasterous damage A Chorus Line did for the genre. If RENT does well, and the Producers, then WICKED will have no problem finding an audience.

ok i didn't know that, for Wicked they should try to get as many as the original Wicked cast in it. Especially Michelle and Idina.

That's not entirely true. And Phantom was neither a critical nor box office smash.

All the same, movie musicals are becoming very popular, and it REALLY excites me. There has now been: Phantom, Moulin Rouge, Chicago, and now Rent. The Producers is becoming a movie and there have been some pretty solid hints for a Urinetown movie. I know Sunset Boulevard (one of my all time FAVORITE musicals, after Wicked) is looking to be made a movie, as well as slight rumors for Hairspray and others. They are in demand right now, and as hugely popular as Wicked is... it will have no problem becoming a musical. Who knows? It may be being seriously dicussed right now -- we just need to be patient. I know, I would love some official news... but alas, it may be 1, 2, 5 years away. Remember, the stage version alone is making millions of dollars. With three productions, that's at least 3 million dollars a week, plus all the merchandise sales. They may wait for the huge sucess of Wicked to a. continue or b. to start dying down and develope a fan base. Wait, a bigger one. Because right now, most people are still being exposed to Wicked, while some are obsessed and seeing it multiple times. What with "The Grimmerie" being released, we are definitely on the right track. Also, I believe the original casts memebers contracts state that they must be the first person looked at for the job in a movie version.

well i think that norbert leo butz looks a little old to play fiyero(no offense and go u for winning your tony) but like i think David ayers looks the part of fiyero dead on...we at least the first part anyway...but other than thati of course would want the original cast to be in it....and if they made the movie about the book, nessa would have no arms(i havent finished the book yet so i dont know what happens about that)and i like the " i cant walk " concept much better

def agreeing with the joel grey thing. he is THE wizard (although i saw ben vereen and david garrison who were excellent, as well). and i agree david ayers looks the part, but he just doesnt sing it well enough. the best person for the role who would both look and sing it well, i vote hugh jackman.

Elphaba_Beau, good idea! i never even thought of hre. the only thing is she def seems more soprano and nessa is more of an alto/mezzo role. she does have the nessa look though, and if she could sing it, thatd be great. itd be good publicity, too. might even draw a few phantom fans to see it.

ok, so, i personally think tim burton should direct the wicked film, he could put a really neat spin on things. if only there was a part for johnny depp....
I don't think nicole or ewan have the voices. I want stephanie and kristen, maybe kendra.

i think that they will wait wait to make the wicked movie(if they are) until the musical dies down because if they make the movie, people willl pay their $6 to go to the movie theater and the purpose of anyone(other than use die hard wicked fans) to see wicked on broadway for $150+ would be useless

so therefore like chicago and phantom...the movie wont be made for quite some time but like someone suggested....they could use like idina and kristen(if they're too old)as the older versions and new people as the youngins at shiz

OMG! I TOTALLY SAID THAT! I was talking to my friend and I said that I thought the only person who could pull off the granduer of Wicked was Tim Burton. He is highly stylistic, and if you watch his films, he has an acute attention for detail, along with a perceptive understanding of what the human eye will enjoy the most visually, so that the cinematography is just as entertaining as the movie itself.

The ONLY thing is he takes a high level of license in his creativity, and he may pull it a little too far. I have always been a fan of Tim Burton, mainly because of his original ideas, and I wouldnt want his need to be original to hinder his creation of Wicked. But, that being said, if he were to get to job (which i have no idea whether or not he's even considered) I wouldnt be at all unhappy.

Also, It seems to me that if a movie were to come out, it just WOULD NOT be the same as going to see it in a theater. The movie would rock, but live theater is something you cant recreate on film. It's a whole different experience and fans will still go see the show on Broadway even if a movie were to come out.

I couldn't agree more. Theatre is something you do when in NYC - whether or not you've seen the film. Big Apples and oranges.

But like i said before, Tim Burton cut the music from Charlie and the Choclote Fatory to make it more like the book....I would think he would do the same to Wicked and i would rather read the book and see the show WITH all songs included...if he cut Defying Gravity...someone's going down!

The book and the musical are two different entities. If a movie were to be made about the book, then it would be the book full out. If a movie were to be made about the musical, then it would be all musical, no cutting songs. That would be respected depending on which version they do, I should think, because the musical IS a lot different than the book, that that would be the case.

Update:: I havent heard anything back from universal, so I really dont think I will. Im guessing they write it off as junk mail if it doesnt pertain to anything relevant.

In the meantime I checked out imdb.com which posts ALL movies (thus the title of "internet movie database"), in all stages of production:: pre-production, in production, and post-production. Wicked isnt up there yet, so if they had already started ANYTHING, it would be there, but it isnt. So I'm guessing there is a good chance it isnt close to coming out yet.

Also, I saw Kendra Kessebaum in San Fran and she was dynomite...amazing, and beautiful. She had the Glinda mannerisms down, and was SO fun to watch. Plus, her voice is phenomenal. She is someone I wouldnt mind watching in a film. Just seeing her doing Popular gives me goosebumps, and usually only defying gravity could do that. ^.^

That's a shame... a film or miniseries based on the book (rather than the musical) would surely generate interest in the B'way and touring productions. Of course there's not a problem of interest today, but Broadway audiences are funny - something huge could come out soon that detracts attention.

I think Jessia Alba would be good for Glinda. I just think she looks so natural which would be perfest for Glinda. She does not seem to have a bubbly personality but practice makes perfect. For Elphaba I would probably want Kiera Knightly. I don't know why. She seems to look a little Wicked.
