I can't remember if it was last week or the week before that, but in Entertainment weekly RECENTLY, there was a blurb from Gregory Maguire (I think) saying that someday there would be a movie version of Wicked, but not anytime soon...something like that. Yero - you say you read it - do you remember? By the way, just for my 2 cents - if Hilary Duff plays G(a)linda, I will personally supply barf bags, that's like saying Britney Spears should do it! I think it should be Kristin and Idina - there are tons of Wicked fans out there - just look at the box office returns! Rent wasn't anywhere near the smash hit that Wicked is. It's either them or they have to discover some hidden young talent! They would ruin the whole thing if Hilary Duff was cast as Glinda. EWWWWW! IP: Logged |

I have never seen GM talk about a Wicked movie in EW, nor anyone else. Are you sure it was EW? IP: Logged |

Do you know what issue? I have each one from about May...I may have overlooked it, but I don't seem to remeber it in EW. IP: Logged |

I couldn't find it - but I do not keep them for long. I am positive I read it recently (Fall, not summer), I am positive it was EW, that is the only entertainment magazine I read, but I can't remember if it was Maguire. It was a sidebar - very small or could have been mixed in with one of their write ups about Dreamgirls (but not last week's). I think they asked about making a sequel to the stage version or a Wicked movie. There were no plans for either, of that I am sure. I am almost positive it was GM because I remember him saying he wasn't sure about writing a screenplay. I will look when I get home - maybe I can find it. Now it is driving me crazy! IP: Logged |

I have every issue from summer & fall & could not find anything about GM or Wicked. I tend to keep clippings & things about the books I am interested in, so if there had been something, I would have it. IP: Logged |

Early Alzheimers? I'm sorry guys - I know I read it - I am pretty sure if I was dreaming, I would haved dreamed they WERE doing a movie, not that they weren't. ANyway, if I run across it again I will let you know the issue - didn't mean to cause a commotion. IP: Logged |

No, but in a quest to redeem myself, I found this on musicalschwartz.com: In answer to the question about a movie he responded: Wicked movie: There are no legal versions of the complete show. Sorry that we can't offer Wicked videotape or Wicked DVDs. Perhaps after the show runs on Broadway and around the world for many years, a film will be made. It was probably him that responded to the other question and not GM. Many years - I'd say the movie is gonna be a long wait. IP: Logged |

ok so i know i wrote a thing saying who i wanted to be the cast but i thought we were just talking about if they made one i found out they officially decided to make one just a couple days ago and all i have to say is if the producers pick anyone like hillary duff for glinda i dont remember who said that they would bring personal barf bags for everyone but i'll supply half of those for you too and i will make sure the emergency exits are open i mean if hillary play glinda the whole movie will be bad i mean my outlook on this whole thing is that a movie is a bad idea all together i mean it totally ruins the effect like defying gravity people will be alot less amazed and mezmorized on screen than if they see it in person if they make a movie it will totally ruin wicked IP: Logged |

Thanks for helping me with the barf bags Blondie Elphie - we're gonna need a lot! Now I am confused - where did you read that they are officially doing it? I just spent the last two days tring to remember where I had read they WERE NOT doing it (not beyond "someday" anyway!) I don't think it would ruin Wicked nothing can ruin Wicked, but like Phantom, Rent, etc., it just wouldn't be as good - you won't get that "caught up in the moment" feeling that you get when you see it live, but I think it will still be worth watching. A good friend of mine works for a casting company in LA & told me TODAY that NO ONE is making a movie of Wicked any time soon. Nice try, Blonde Elphie, but many years from now is much more likely & by then, even Hilary Duff will probably be too old. [This message has been edited by booklady (edited 11-16-2006).] IP: Logged |

Hmm....I just had a thought. A few days ago, I began drafting a screenplay for Munchkinlanders and it got me thinking: What if I (or someone more qualified) makes a series of movies based on Wicked, siilar to the Star Wars franchise? I mean, I personally would rather see the book turned into a movie than the musical, and I think the only way you could do true justice to it is by filming everything. IP: Logged |

I think that would be a lot of fun. I'd still like to see the musical as a movie someday in the distant future, mostly so I can have it (legally) in my home, but the book is a completely different story. It would be completely different. I like the idea. I both write and act, so if you're looking for help... IP: Logged |

What kind of rights would we need to get? IP: Logged |

We would need to buy the movie rights from Universal since Maguire already sold 'em. IP: Logged |

If Stephen Schwartz couldn't get an accurate screenplay for the book, what's different about this new screenplay in which it would be different? Also, I think a lot of people would be disappointed with a book movie because more people (fans of the musicals and people who can't afford to see the show) would be upset because it isn't based on the musical, which is funny, creative, and overall a better plot (in my opinion and in the opinion of quite a few others) than the book has. Sorry GM! If it wasn't for him Wicked would never have been though, so it still was his original idea that boosted the musical into action. IP: Logged |

The musical is painfully straight forward and watered down. It's so basic, it hurts. As a musical, it is nice, but there is really no depth; it's a superficial show. That's not bad, but on film that seems horrible. To have the subterfuge and subtext translated from the book to the silver screen would be much more fulfilling to the art of film. Perhaps a movie musical would be more of a box office hit, but it seems stupid to take a stage production and just throw it in a movie theatre. The complexties are lost. IP: Logged |

I see the pros and cons of both way of making a movie. The musical would be more appreciated, but the book would be more artistic. Personally I would prefer the musical being made into a movie (in several decades or so) but I would also go see it if the book was made into a musical. IP: Logged |

I could see it either way - the movie of the musical would be fun....the movie of the book could be awesome - even a francise ala Lord of the Rings - I would love to see a movie of both - but we all realize we are dreaming, right? It would be a tough sell for either of them, but especially the book - even though that would be far more interesting. If people see a "Wicked" movie, I think the mainstream would want the movie of the musical. IP: Logged |

Honestly I think there has to be a nice balance in there. Couldn't there be a movie based on the music, with the depth of the book added in? Musicals can be deep if they're allowed to be. It might have to be changed up a little. Or maybe it would never work? I don't know. They are very different stories though. I have a question for everyone - do you think that the book and musical are different enough that someday, spread far enough apart, two different films could be made? (They'd be geared for different audiences, really.) Or would that be too much like remakes of each other? Just curious what others out there think. IP: Logged |

I do think that the book & musical are different enough for 2 different film versions, but I don't ever see that happening. The huge success of the musical has completely overshadowed the novel in most people's minds & IF a movie is made, it will be the musical version. IP: Logged |

I agree totally with booklady. I would love to see both versions, but it will be the musical that gets made if it happens. I am sure there are not alot of us who read the book, and then got excited about the musical. I am sure the majority saw the musical anf then said "Oh look! There's a book too!" IP: Logged |

That's right, Im sure the great majority saw the musical first. I would love to see a movie based on the book. I, by the way, Fell in love with the book first (year 2000) then found out there was a musical. i love musicals, i got excited. IP: Logged |

Yeah, I'm one of the ones who heard the music first, but I'm a firm believer in reading the book before I see a movie or show based on it, if I can help it. IP: Logged |

I don't know if I agree that most people saw the musical, then realized there was a book. I guess maybe it is because of the area that I come from. See, we are several hours drive away from most cities that would attract a still fairly new musical like "Wicked". So just about everyone I know that has seen the musical made the trip to a more metropolitan area just to see it because they have already read the book and loved it. In fact, at our local high school the Senior English classes read the book, and during spring break when the marching band went to california they got to go see the musical. About 100 kids in all. What an opportunity for them. And as far as the movie goes, I think that I too would like to see a movie based on the book. And who knows, it may happen. There were many, different movies based on the novel "Phantom of the Opera" before the recent one based on the musical. Which reminds me, as far as casting for a movie goes, I agree with someone very early in this thread that said that the guy who plays the phantom in the new movie would be a good Fieyro. I believe his name is Gerard Butler. IP: Logged |

I am a newbie here, but I wanted to throw my two cents in on my dream cast. Basically, its mostly the OBC - Elphaba: No other choice but Idina Menzel I am sorry, but I am a huge Norbert Leo Butz fan, so I could only see him in this role. Period! No substitutions! IP: Logged |

You are so right. No one can beat Norbert's voice. He looked great in that part. Alas, I only saw him through pictures. Sadly, Hollywood won't call him for this part, because, they are in a word, STUPID. IP: Logged |

I know.. Hollywood is stupid. If they went ahead with the movie - say NOW - instead of pulling a POTO and waiting forever, then the OBC could do it and it would be fantastic. It has been said that just because movies were made of Rent and POTO, it has not diminished the broadway shows at all. IP: Logged |

I've never actually gotten to see the show *live* but I love Norbert. Still, I know he won't be in the movie. I like Emmy Rossum for Nessa, maybe? Since I can't... IP: Logged |

I would love to see Uma Thurman as Elphie! She was fun in the Producers, but I think she is so versatile that she could do it amazingly! Although, of course I would love even more to see Idina and Kristen do it! IP: Logged |

DO you think she could pull off singing Defying Gravity - I haven't seen The Producers movie yet, but I can't imagine her belting it out. Thoughts? IP: Logged |
