OMG Taye Diggs is awesome, i downloaded him and Idina singing "As long as your mine" they were both amazing! He should be Fiyero in the movie (if there was one)

Haha! that's the thing-there is no movie (yet). Only rumours of one. Cast, release dates, all that is pure speculation.

Although a rather recent rumour says that Idina Menzel has signed on to do the film for sure, and that pre-production will start spring 2006.

That may mean, however, that Kristin Chenoweth is out-her schedule's pretty much packed with films, concerts, promotions, and operas until at least 2008.

Personally, I agree that any movie version of the musical won't be coming out until the live version has exhausted its popularity.
I haven't see the musical yet but from what I remember in the book, doesn't the second half take place a number of years after Elphaba and G(a)linda leave Shiz? I think that it would be interesting if (if a movie is made) two actors/actresses were cast for each character- One to play the Shiz aged character and the other to play the older version. That way, Indina (sp?) and Kristin could still be in it, even if they are not young enough to play college aged girls. This is just a thought.
Thanks for your time.

I think that Elijah Wood would be a good Boq (he's the right height too ).

I've always thought Resse Witherspoon could pull of a good Glinda, but she might not be able to sing it. And she might not want to do it as well. It would be type casting her in way from Legally Blonde.

I agree. I think that Reese would be able to pull off the character, though I'm not sure if she is up to the singing. I also agree that her character Elle from Leagally Blonde is practically a twin of Glinda...minus the being a witch part. Lol.

WOW, you guys, I had no idea this topic would generate the response it has. TOO COOL! There's really no info out there as to what's going on (if anything); I just wanted to get people's thoughts on creative casting.

I'd like to ammend it a little: 2 film possibilities
1.) 'Wicked the Musical', based on the B'way show. Please suggest people who CAN sing! But remember Hollywood will want most of the cast to have a proven on-screen track record.

2.) 'Wicked' based on the book. Please suggest actors and actresses.

actually i've heard tell that kristin chenoweth has already signed a contract with universal pictures for the movie.

but that's an easy one. half the musical is written for her voice.

idina will probably (hopefully) be elphaba. hollywood might require big names but idina is pretty big. she was/is in rent, oui?

just some thoughts

Umm.....Kristen Chenowith is in Bewitched...the new Pink Panther...and several others movies. She's already IN hollywood.

And I'm not sure I even need to mention that Idina Menzel just finished the movie version of Rent which is coming out November 23rd.

If anyone is going to be Elphaba and Glinda...it NEEDS to be them. The only speculation I heard is that they arent willing to pay Idina as much as she believes she deserves...I say "It's frikin Idina Menzel, you pay her whatever! Elphaba is HER part"

So yea, no way are Idina and Kristen "too small" for hollywood. They've already been there.

Oh yea, and another thing. I believe Universal already has the movie rights. They'll strike while the iron is hot on this one. As for me...I have a dream cast....

Elphaba - Idina Menzel
Glinda - Kristen Chenowith
Nessarose - (I absolutely loved) Jenna Leigh Green
Fiyero - Derrick Williams or Taye Diggs, either would be great
Boq - Logan Lipton (San Fran and LA shows)
Madame Morrible - Bette Midler or Bernadette Peters
The Wizard - (this may be a little weird but..) Steve Martin

So taht's my dream cast extraordinaire. Tell me what you think

Yeah, Kristin's got The Music Man, Bewitched, Pink Panther, The RV, Running with Scissors, Stranger than Fiction, Rapunzel Unbraided, and the Dusty Springfield biopic. Along with her Candide, her Tony, her CD's, The West Wing, and Wicked, I think it's safe to say she has a big enough name.

Honey, Hollywood thrives off of can making older actors look young. Besides...have you seen Mean Girls? Rachel McAdams was 26 and she was playing a SIXTEEN year old. I had no idea she was that old.

Notice in tv series and movies, they'll cast people in their high 20's to play teenagers. A ten year difference give or take a few years. So if Kristen Chenowith is in her 30's...then it would be perfect for her to play Glinda in her 20's!

Kristin is now 37, if she played a 20 year old thats a 17 year difference! Way to much, she can't pull of a 20 year old look.

i think she could, shes short enough, and with enough makeup, they can make anyone look young. kristin still looks quite young when you see her on TV, when i learned she was 37, i was shocked. i think they could make her look young enough. and to answer your question elphaba_rocks, theyd probably use jenna leigh green as nessa before michelle federer, b/c people might actually know who jenna is. if they used michelle, people would have a similar reaction as they did to tracie thoms playing joanne in the RENT movie (people literally said "who the hell is that?") michelle definately has the talent, but jennas got the name AND the talent.

Thats sad because I love Michelle, she has a great voice and is a great actress. I wish she was more famous like Jenna. Jenna has a bunch of fansites, i don't think Michelle has even one Does she?

Michelle or Jenna, I honestly dont think reconition is the goal when it comes to casting a part, it doesnt matter how many people know your name, it's whoever plays the part better. I've only seen Jenna so that's why my ideal cast includes her, I cant speak for Michelle seeing as I've never seen her perform. For all I know, she's better. But I'm not going to say because I dont know.

I would also like to point out that we are all assuming the movie is going to be based off the musical. What if the movie is based off the book? It would be a whole different cast!! The book and the musical require different strengths, and if the movie is the book's counterpart, then none of our picks for anyone would go into consideration!

That would suck if it was based on the book. Don't get me wrong i love the book, but the musical plot would be better for tv then the book's plot.

I always thought it would be the best trade if there was a movie based on the musical...then a miniseries based on the book. They could play it on HBO to have all the gory details of Elphaba's life, and include all the Maguire-esque nuances that the book so cleverly holds. Then the movie-musical would be perfect because it's an all-audiences extravaganza that is perfect for a huge crowd. I think the book version would have a more select crowd, being people who have read the book or are interested in the darker aspects behind Elphaba's life. The musical would be good for anyone and everyone, happy ending and all. That's just my opinion.

I don't think it would be possible to get them ALL back together, considering some of them have moved on to new musicals or movies.

Yes, Rent isn't all original cast members.

As for who is the best Nessarose... I think Heidi Kettenring brings the character alive best, and she is an amazing actor. She plays Nessarose perfectly. Michelle is a very good signer, but she looks... old or something. I don't think I would call her beautfully tragic, but that is my opion. Her acting isn't the best, during Wicked Witch of the East she just stared out at the audience as if she really didn't know what to do with herself know that she was alone and center stage. As for Jenna... she is very, very good looking. Her acting is very good, but her singing, while good, is too baby-ish. She sounds like a cartoon voice-over. I like Heidi the best, though they are all very good.

I think keeping the original broadway cast would be a great idea. My only change...Josh Groban as Fiyero. He's not very well known outside of his circle of fans, so you don't have this huge name like Brad Pitt or Hugh Jackmon (just to name a few I've seen suggested). He has the look, the voice, the talent. I think he would be fantastic.

I really hope the do make a movie out of the musical (or just the book...either would be great)

Okay, i recently shot an email over to Universal (who, as I understand it, owns the movie rights) asking them several questions:

1. If they even own the movie right
2. If they have started the project yet
3. Any other information that can be released to the public at this time.

So, hopefully, we'll get some answers about all the movie rumors we've been hearing. Someone said that Demi Moore just got cast as Elphaba, which would make me cry. So, unless I get a big fat "Im sorry, no information at this time", I'll know some details soon and I'll post them asap!

I think that it would be insane to have very well known actors and actresses to be apart of a film version of Wicked. For example, the film version of Rent is coming out and most of the original cast from the Broadway production is in the film, so why can't some of the orginal cast of Wicked be apart of this possible film? The Phantom of the Opera didn't have well-known actors, but everyone loved it anyway! It makes it more original! But I really doubt that they'll ever make a movie from, "Wicked." At least not until we're all dead! Musical movies are just now re-awakening in the public's eye, so for now, lets just appreciate the stage show, which is awesome as it is!
