It's true that both Rent and The Producers did terrible at the box office, but lets not forget the success of Moulin Rouge, Chicago, and (to a lesser extent) Phantom. As a slight optimist, I'd like to believe that a revival of movie musicals is still in full swing!

Sweeney Todd is in the works. I guess we'll see how it does.

I realize I'm a little late on this (how old is this thread, anyway? 2004!!) but better late than never, right?

My picks, if the complete original cast is unavailable:

Elphaba- Idina Menzel/ Catherine Zeta-Jones
Glinda- Kristin Chenowith
Nessarose- Natalie Portman/Kiera Knightley
Fiyero- Josh Groban
Wizard- James Earl Jones. [I love him.]
Boq- Elijah Wood *shrugs*
Morrible- Minne Driver [she did Carlotta so well]

I just read this ENTIRE thread, and here's what I've written as I've gone along. I realize this thread is pretty old, but here it is anyway!!

I don't think the age of Kristin will make that much of a difference-- it was not even three years ago that Wicked was introduced, and if she was playing a girl in her 20's at age 34, then 37 shouldn't really be that different. And makeup is an amazing thing! Just because you age doesn't mean you lose anything except skin cells. :P

And to the people that have said "it won't be for a long time" "it's still in its prime"... Phantom of the Opera was released two years ago, and the stage show is still going strong!

OH GOD. Don't even mention Hilary Duff. Someone important might see this and get ideas.

Or Emmy Rossum. Sure, she was a good Christine, but Nessa is SO much more dynamic (even as a relatively minor character) than sweet, innocent little Emmy could ever be. ...And Emmy can't sing. True, I don't know if Natalie Portman can sing a lick, but seeing as I already know how Emmy sings... gimme some fresh blood.

I agree that the movie and the stage show will be uncomparable to each other. One's an experience; the other is a movie you can fall in love with and watch over and over. They can remain as two completely separate entities, like Phantom of the Opera, and people will love them both.

o_O. Whoever said "It can't be done because the show is still on Broadway" must be living in a box. Sorry. But just look at the website, and then see how many movies have been made from CURRENT Broadway shows *cough POTO, RENT, Chicago, etc.)!

As much as I *LOVE* the book, it is long and drawn out, and it doesn't really rely very much on dialogue. A lot would have to be changed regardless, which is probably one reason the musical is SO different from the book. True, it keeps the same essence, but one's meant for the multitudes and the other is meant for one-on-one.

I also didn't like how the book left me with questions, whilst the musical did not. For example, who the scarecrow and tinman were-- to my knowledge, the book never says who is who. Elphaba wants to believe the scarecrow is Fiyero, but he ultimately turns out not to be. And Boq, yeah, marries some random Munchkin.

I would want the movie to stay ultimately true to the musical. Same songs, same order, but maybe added details in between. And of course the wonderful stuff you can do with film-- maybe Elphaba can really fly ON the broom, instead of carrying it as she flies. :P And also, everyone who plays a part should do their own singing. Dubbing is unappreciated in my book.

I make no claims to "I HEARD THERE'S GOING TO BE A MOVIE!!!!111!!ELEVEN", since everything I know has come from this thread. So everything I've said in this post is purely my thoughts. And that's all I've got!

Very well said!
I don't care how popular movie musicals are, I will always support them. The fact is that the two entities are like rivals who can't live without each other. These days so many of them borrow off of each other, i.e. Dirty Rotton Scoundrals, Saturday Night Fever.
I don't have to list the musicals that became movies. I will stay optimistic, and say that in my lifetime there will be a Wicked (musical) movie.

Forgive the echo, but welcome.
Glad you liked the thread - had NO IDEA it would take off like this.

I posted a 'Chicago' dream cast thread on a Fosse website and it just laid there - all people could talk about how cute they thought Renee Z was (VOMIT) and how amazing Rob Marshall was (good source material and a creative way to bring it to film through Roxie's head DO NOT equal good direction.)

Ahhh - I haven't ragged on Renee in quite a while - refreshing. I think, if they were to consider her for 'Wicked - the movie musical', it should only be for Dr. Dillamond (bada BING!)

You know, I though I would love the Phantom movie forever and watch it everyday. I only did that for a fews weeks. Now I watch it only ounce every few weeks. It is like that for me with alot of movies. For me, if I could get a filmed verson of the show or a movie verison on DVD, I would watch it every day for only a few weeks. Then I would problitly forget about it.

I completely agree. When Rent came out I watched it 3 times in the theatre. I was rather disheartened that it was so unpopular at the box-office. But then I realized... who cares?

Yay for movie-musicals! ((---and of course the people who watch them---))

I'm hopefully gonna be getting the 3 movie set of Annie, The Music Man, and Cinderella pretty soon.

Kristin Chenoweth stars in two of those! YAY!

I hope she'll still be young enough to play Glinda when/if they make the Wicked movie!!

I don't think Reese is a "bad person", in fact, if they insist on "well known" actresses, I will hope with all my heart that it is Reese. And Idina might just be a box office smash soon enough. She's got Ask the Dust and The Tollbooth...and her upcoming cd, which new Rent fans might buy, along with the old heads.

I don't think Ask the Dusk will roll in the big bucks, but it does get her name out there. She'll probably get more notoriety with Enchanted, (2007).
Madonna is too old for Elphaba, and she has had plenty of bombs at the box office.

Anyway, Britney Spears might be out of the red zone here. I hope anyway, that the producers won't hire anyone who drives with a four month old baby on her lap on the highway...

Supposedly this istrue... I've heard many rumors about Universal studios secret project being Wicked the Movie (Yes, it will be called Wicked!) I don't know who will be Glinda or Elphaba, but I do think Reese Witherspoon for Glinda ( She has the high pitched voice.. .Legally blonde) and MAybe, Hillary Swank for Elphaba... Yeah... SOUNDS GOOD TO ME!!!!

i don't think they would make the movie of the stage show just yet. it hasn't been on stage long enough but they have to do it soon so that they can use Idina to play elphaba because she's the only person who can do justice to the role.

i think hugh jackman should play Fiyero and Topher Grace should play Boq. Nessa by Emmy Rossum and GLinda played by Renee Zellwegger and Morrible by Susan Sarandon and The Wizard by George Hearn. Thats it. bye

I love Hugh, but I think he may be too old for Fiyero. Isn't he in his 40's right now?
Renee? No way. George Hern? More chance of Ben Verene, then that guy. He has a great voice, but George can not dance, or move about like Ben.

well,
Ephaba- Idina, no question
Glinda- Kristen, Megan Hilty, or Reese
Fiyero- Joey Mac, Taye, maybe Adam Pascal?
Morrible- Carol Shelly, Carol Kane, maybe Bette Midler
Wizard- Joel Gray
Nessa- Michelle, come to think of it...Emmy Rossum might pull it off.
Boq- it doesn't matter to me
I would think that they should stick to to OBC...or people that have played the characters before...
